Characteristics of animals to the climate of the S.W –Many animals in the SW have :-

• LOW WATER REQUIREMENT – to survive the summer drought & many get much of their water from their food

• Eg. Reptiles need very little water Kangaroos tend to eat at dawn & dusk

• HEAT AVOIDANCE – many feed at dawn & dusk & some are nocturnal

• Eg. Wombat is nocturnal & stays in burrows at night Kangaroos tend to eat at dawn & dusk

Relationship between FAUNA & vegetation type

• Provides HABITAT(sclerophyll forest/woodland)

• Provides Food (vegetation, other animals)

• Provides protection (eg. Camouflage in the dull grey-

green on sclerophyll plants)

NUMBAT

WESTERN GREY KANGAROO

Lives in burrows to escape daytime heat & is nocturnal

The various layers of the forest are home to certain types of animals,

Aboreal (tree dwelling) animals inhabit the upper levels – eg birds & possums
