Open Educational Ideas

and Innovations (OEI2)

Idea sharing in open professional virtual communities

Henri Pirkkalainen

PhD, Project Researcher

University of Jyväskylä, Finland

The key issue: How to increase educational collaborations

towards new courses and services

- e.g. co-creating Open Educational Resources

Potential of OER

versus current uptakeClear benefits of using

& re-using OER • Collaboration

• Quality improvement

• Cost savings

• Foster/enable cross-border

teaching

OER use and re-use not (yet) a

common practice in Higher

Education, schools & enterprises

Re-use of OER is generally low

Lack of

appreciation &

recognition in

the community

New measures needed

Proposing a new approach to Open Education: Idea sharing

-Developing ideas collaboratively instead of sharing something that is finalized

-Utilizing virtual communities with shared interests and ambition

How to do this?

Exchanging ideas on

• OERs• Full courses• Open textbooks• Educational projects• Supplementary materials• Etc.

Share your own or join existing

ones

-Plan your steps

-write collaboratively

-Use collaborative features

(conferencing, chatting etc)

-Share your workhttp://idea-space.eu/

http://idea-space.eu/

Current ideas worked on:

-OER for refugees

-Programming for kids

-Healthy school project

-New educational services

-Open Badges for OER

-….

Considerations:

-Sharing ideas in a distributed setting not trivial

-Outcome expectations need to be clear

-Are you protective towards your ideas or do you welcome the help of others?

Curious? Create an idea space

-We’ll help to spread the word about

your idea & invite collaboration

among our network

Idea Space in your environment?

-Exploring possibilities to integrate

the Idea Space for your purposes

Thank you
