Ideas for a superintendent or manager meeting on safety
The following slides are provided as a thought starter for your regular superintendent or manager meeting on safety.
Please feel free to use these slides or ideas We encourage you to show a safety reminder video from the
free app iConstructSafe available in the Apple Store Let us know what is useful and how we can improve, please
email MaryKate@iConstructSafe.com iConstructSafe is a free iPhone/iPad app of safety reminder
videos for use by construction workers at the construction site. These 2-3 minute videos remind workers on how to use equipment safely, right before they use a tool, minimizing time between training and tool use for better recall of safety information.

Fall weather – freezing to warm in 1 dayFrost in the mornings, 70s in the afternoon
Are your foremen checking the weather each day given the usual fluctuations in fall weather?
Are workers aware of slippery morning conditions with the early frosts?
Are workers layering up to accommodate the changing temperatures?
What accidents happened last fall that we can learn from?

Watch the 2 minute video on the iConstructSafe app
Discuss with the team: What reminder is easiest to forget? Have you rewarded or recognized anyone
lately for using ladders and harnesses well? What near misses (or accidents) have
happened with ladders in the past year? How can we encourage use of safety
reminder videos at the site? What videos do we need?

Using Safety Reminder Videos:Preventing falls – using the iConstructSafe Ladder video
Gloves – keep them on (after you take them off)
1.1m Emergency Room visits every year in the US for hand injuries (BLS)
Leading cause of (non-fatal) injury was contact with cutting or piercing objects: knives, power tools, nails, metal
15% led to amputation
Gloves help – 63% of hand injuries are lacerations
Only 19% of injured workers were wearing gloves

Better Glove OptionsWearing gloves is key; keeping them on is critical
Consider flat dipped lightly coated gloves that are more comfortable because of their dexterity
Oily grip? Foam or sponge gloves
Vibration? Use anti-vibration gloves
Cut resistance? Try Kevlar
Consider chemical hazards and durability

Discussion on using incentivesShould we use incentives? What would work best for us? How should we create a program for our people?
"my experience with incentives has been positive in this manner. We did not highlight any one person. What we did was use raffle tickets for the each contractor's group of workers. Whichever contractor did not receive a write up for a safety violation or had a safety violation, that team received a ticket per man. Then we would draw the ticket copy from a box and depending what item was selected, the winning number was announced. Prizes ranged from restaurant gift cards($25-50), MP3 players, GPS system, flat screen TV(38-42"), first aid kits(50 man), Sears, Lowe's and Home Depot gift cards. If there was one person that stood out over all the rest, then a public presentation of a certificate and a $100 gift card(VISA, MASTERCARD). An incentive program used wisely and thought-out properly works. But management must be 100% behind the safety culture, or nothing works.”

Discussion on using incentives
How can we ensure we are compliant?
Check the OSHA requirements and the latest updates on their site
Ensure that you are NOT rewarding or encouraging the non-reporting of any incident
Consider rewarding team members who report near misses
