Ancient Human Remains: Otzi the Iceman

• Axe blade - This is the blade in its entirety. While in use, up to three quarters would have been buried in the shaft head.

Shoe - The Iceman's right shoe is better preserved. It has a bearskin leather sole and the upper part is deer leather, with woven grass and hay for extra warmth.

• Construction of the Shoe - the Iceman's left shoe is less well preserved, but shows how grass was woven to give the shoe structure.

Dagger and Sheath - This ash and flint dagger is about 13cm long. The dagger has a leather handle at the end, and a leather hoop on

the sheath allows it to be fastened to a belt.

• Dagger - The blade is pushed deep into the wooden handle, and fastened in place with string

arrows

• Arrowhead - This arrowhead is an exact replica of one found inside the body of the Iceman, which may have been what killed him.

• Tassel with Stone Bead - The tassels attached to the marble bead may have been carried in case they were needed for repair - or they may have been decoration.

• Quiver - This quiver, made from leather and hazelwood, was nearly a metre long. It was found with two complete arrows inside, together with twelve partly constructed shafts.

• Birch Fungus - The Iceman carried two spherical lumps of birch fungus, which he would have used for medicinal purposes.

• Cloak - These large pieces of plaited grass were at first mistaken for a mat. However, closer examination revealed that they formed part of a large cloak, worn above the Iceman's other clothing.

• Cap - The Iceman's cap was made from the fur of a brown bear.
