THE PROGRAMMES:ICS! MINISSchool Years 1-2ICS! JUNIORSSchool Years 3-5ICS! SENIORSSchool Years 6+

Vocal Training introducesstudents to the joy of performingand expressing their emotionsthrough song, focusing ondeveloping singing skills in ahealthy way, breathing,posture, intonation, timbre andlearning to sing as part of a largegroup of performers. Studentswork with a variety of musicalgenres, with a focus on musicaltheatre and dramatic singing.

Musicianship develops musicalliteracy and understanding throughstudents’ very own musicalinstrument – their voice. Theydevelop their understanding ofpitch, rhythm, dynamics and tempothough interactive vocal andphysical exercises as well aswritten and aural skills. Studentsare given a contextual introductionto repertoire they are learningand beyond, to gain a broaderunderstanding of the musicalgenres in which they are working.

Dance Training teachesstudents dance steps and routinesbased on a fusion of the dancestyles that make up theatre danceperformance, whilst encouragingthem to be active and healthy.They also learn how to usemovement to express emotionand action as part of musicalperformance. Dance techniquesessions offer a chance toconsolidate steps and styles out of the context of a routine.

Performance Training helpsto build skills in music theatre soas to convey the emotional powerof music and movement on stage.Students will learn a variety ofperformance skills, ranging fromhow to use characterisation inmusical scenes to learningtheatrical stunts, and are givenplenty of scope for solo work,which helps them to buildconfidence and develop theircommunication skills.

Performances give everyonethe opportunity to showcasemusical theatre repertoire, take to the stage in HMDT Musiccommissions, or work with writers and composers to createnew work.

I CAN SING! (ICS!Performing Arts) is HMDT’sMusic Theatre School, whichoffers students aged 5 - 16 anopportunity to experience theexcitement of musical theatretraining and performance.During ICS!, students train in avariety of stage disciplines.They meet new friends and,together with leadingprofessional artists, gain theskills and confidence necessaryto perform to a high level.

I CAN SING! runs weeklythroughout the academic year,welcoming students of allabilities. There is no auditionprocess, and, unlike similarschemes, ICS! reinforces theensemble performing traditionand focuses upon repertoireranging from classic Broadwayto original HMDT Musiccommissions, emphasising anappreciation of the rich musictheatre tradition.
