INTRODUCTION
• The presentation is basically aimed at expressing the outline of
my relevance practical experience and exposure to work ethics
during my six months Industrial Training at DOYIN
INVESTMENT NIGERIA LIMITED.
• The above named company is into the production of two main
household products namely;
• New global Arial Detergent
• Bold Detergent (Blue Omo)
• During my short stint with them, I worked under the supervision
of Mr. Abu-Bakr O. Ibrahim as a Laboratory analyst and quality
control analyst and also learn more about work ethics.
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COMPANY • A detergent and soap industry is one of the
largest and most successful industries in Nigeria.
• Global soap and detergent industry was incorporated on 8th October, 1984 as the first wholly and indigenous soap and detergent Manufacturing Company.
• The company is operated, managed and directed by full blooded Nigerians. Owned by a courageous and experienced industrialist of high repute, Prince (Dr) Samuel Adedoyin who has for many years been championing indigenous technology, backward integration and the use of local raw materials in Nigeria.
• The company has on its board, Prince (Dr) Samuel Adedoyin D.L.H, FMSF, FWAPF piloting as the Chairman/Managing director while the affairs of the establishment are managed under the astute leadership of Mrs. Omolola Olobayo who is the Executive Director.
Factory summary information: 5 tons per hourCurrent capacity is 10 tons per hour.

Raw materials Function
LABS (RC6H4SO3H)
Active ingredient, forms the surfactant which emulsifies, suspends and remove dirt from surface.
CAUSTIC SODA (NaOH)
Neutralizes the sulfonic acid to form the surfactants (alkyl benzene sulfonate)
WATER (H2O) As a solvent. Causes homogenous mixture of the ingredients.
Sodium sulphate (Na2SO4)
As a filler and diluting agent
Sodium Silicate (NaSiO3)
An anti – corrosion agent, a binder , alkalinity moderator and drying agent
OBA,Enzyme,kaolin
RAW MATERIALS
% PURITY
• Procedure
• Weigh 1-2g of acid sample into 250ml conical flask
• Add 100ml of hot water
• Swirl to dissolve completely
• Cool in water bath
• Add 2 drops of phenolphthalein indicator
• Titrate to pink color with standardized solution.
• CALCULATION
• A= TV x0.5N (NAOH) x100
• WT OF SAMPLE x 1000
• The essence of this analysis is to check the purity of the sulphonic acid.
• And the accepted value in this regard ranges from 94-99.
•
•
% H2SO4
• Transfer the titrated solution into 500ml volumetric flask and make it
up to the mark
• Pipette 50ml into 250ml volumetric flask and make it up to the mark
• Pipette 10ml into titrating reagent solution and titrate against hyamine
solution to light blue as end point.
•
• CALCULATION
• B= TV x0.0034N (HYM) x500x250x100
• WT OF SAMPLE x 50x10x1000
• %purity= B-320
• %H2SO4= (A-B) 49
• 320= Equivalent of sulphonic acid
• 49= Equivalent of sulphuric acid
ACID VALUE
• Weigh 0.25g of acid sample
• Add 50ml of neutralized ethanol solution
• Shake to dissolve
• Add 2 drops of phenolphthalein
• Titrate against standardized KOH (1N) to light pink color.
• CALCULATION
• TV x0.1N (KOH) x56.11
WT OF SAMPLE
• 56.11 =Equivalent of KOH
• WT= Weight
• The essence of this analysis is to determine the acid value or
neutralization number in the solution.
• The accepted acid value ranges from 160-185.
•

ANALYSIS ON THE PRODUCTS
• SLURRY and POWDERED DETERGENT
• Sampling
• % moisture content
• Specific gravity/Bulk density
• % active detergent

CHEMISTRY OF DETERGENT
• Water: Hydrophobic Hydrophilic
• Oil: Lipophilic Lipophobic
• The balance between the two parts decisive for
the properties of the Surfactant
Conclusion
• The programme has served its intended
purposes by furnishing me with all the needed
practical skills on detergent manufacturing and
all the laboratory operations needed to control
the product before it gets to the final consumer.
Kudos to the organizers of the program.
