IBM Lotus Symphony, OpenOffice.org 3.0, andMicrosoft Office 2003, Microsoft Office 2007
Feature Comparison
Executive Summary
IBM® Lotus® SymphonyTM software is a suite of office productivity applications for creating,
editing, and sharing word processing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Designed to
handle the work needs of the majority of users, the three applications that comprise IBM Lotus
Symphony -- documents, presentations and spreadsheets -- are richly-featured and easy-to-use.
Lotus Symphony is based on the open, community developed and tested technologies from
OpenOffice.org and Eclipse. Lotus Symphony goes beyond basic productivity applications by
also providing a rich, extensible environment for building applications.
Available in 28 languages, Lotus Symphony supports Windows, Linux (RedHat, Suse and
Ubuntu) as well as Mac OS X (Intel) platforms and enables businesses to start working smarter
by allowing them to:
1. take control over spiraling upgrade and licensing costs with an open solution based on
industry standard OpenDocument Format (ODF) that is available at no charge
2. access and maintain documents well into the future without concern for ongoing software
licensing and royalty fees
3. get more value from current and previous Microsoft investments as Lotus Symphony can
also open, edit and save content as Microsoft® Office file formats
For many organizations, Lotus Symphony is a viable alternative to purchasing, deploying, and
managing typical vendor-proprietary productivity suites.

This document is intended to provide you with a broad, detailed comparison of Lotus
Symphony 1.2 vis-a-vis Microsoft Office 2003, 2007 and OpenOffice.org 3.0. It is worth
noting, in November 2008, IBM publicly announced it's continued support for OpenOffice.org
as part of the community and commitment to bring Lotus Symphony onto the OpenOffice.org
3.x code base as well as make contributions back to the community. IBM has already begun
work on that effort.
While comprehensive in review, this document cannot cover all aspects of all products. If you
have specific questions about Lotus Symphony and how it might benefit your organization,
please contact your Lotus sales representative.

File Formats Supported OpenDocument Format (ODF) is an XML-based document file format for saving and sharing
editable office documents, spreadsheets, charts, and presentations. ODF is an application-
independent file format created by the Organization for the Advancement of Structured
Information Systems (OASIS) standards organization and supported by the International Standards
Organization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commissions (IEC) .
Adopting ODF-supporting applications in your business or service means you are not locked into a
single vendor in order to share and communicate your document data. ODF is important because
it provides choice, cost effectiveness, and control over the use of your documents and the
intellectual property contained therein. ODF enables efficient interchange of information between
various parts of an organization and between organizations.
Lotus Symphony software can open, create, edit and save documents, spreadsheets and
presentations in a variety of file formats. In addition, Lotus Symphony software can also convert
documents, spreadsheets, and presentations types into Adobe® Portable Document Format (PDF)
files. The following table summarizes the file formats supported by Lotus Symphony.

SpreadsheetsLotus Symphony spreadsheets allow end users to create, edit, share and save spreadsheets. Lotus Symphonyspreadsheets follow standard conventions for presenting data and calculations in organized rows and columns, providefull range of functions, support data manipulation techniques with DataPilot tables (i.e. Pivot tables) and easily creategraphs and charts. Lotus Symphony spreadsheets offer functionality very similar to Microsoft Excel. Both are highlyprogrammable applications, with hundreds of built-in functions. IBM Lotus Symphony software's language independentAPIs make adding more functionally very easy.
