TheSustainABLEacDvitykitscoverfourkeyconcepts.First,whatdoes“sustainability”mean?Sustainabilitymeanshealthypeople,communi1es,andenvironments,nowandinthefuture.You’llseethatthisconceptappearsinmanyoftheacDviDes.ThisinteracDonbetweenhumansandourenvironmentisveryimportant.SustainabilityisnotjustaboutprotecDngthenaturalenvironment—it’saboutensuringagoodqualityoflifeforpeople,too.SomeofthekitacDviDesspecificallyconsiderthewaysociety,theenvironment,andtheeconomyinteract.ThisissomeDmescalledthe“3Ps”:People,Planet,andProsperity.

Second,whatissustainabilityscience?Sustainabilitysciencestudiestheinterac1onbetweenpeopleandtheplanet,andfindsinnova1veandresponsiblesolu1ons.SustainabilityscienceisdefinedbytheholisDcapproachittakestosolvingproblems.SustainabilityscienDstscanbeinanyfieldofscienceorengineering,andtheycanuseavarietyofmethods.OXen,theyuseanapproachcalledsystemsthinkingtoconsidertheinterrelated,interdependent,andinteracDngelementsofproblems.SomeofthekitacDviDesgivevisitorsachancetoexploresystemsthinking.

Third,sustainabilitythinksaheadtothefuture.Sustainabilitysolu/onsaddresstoday’sbiggestchallengestocreatethefuturewewant.Futuresthinkingrecognizestherolethatindividualsandsocietyplayinbuildingourfutureandreflectsonthekindofworldwecreatethroughourdecisionsandchoices.ManyofthekitacDviDesemphasizetheimportanceofthinkingaboutthefuture.

Fourth,sustainabilityisrelevanttoallofus:Everyonehasaparttoplayincrea1ngourfuture.BeingachangeagentinvolvesaskingquesDonsandtakingacDons,asindividualsandcommuniDes.EachacDvityinthekitincludesanexampleofwaysthatdifferentcommuniDescan(andhave)madesustainablechoices.SustainablesoluDonswillbedifferentfordifferentfamiliesandindifferentplaces.YoucanhelpparDcipantsthinkaboutthewaystheycanembracesustainability—leavingitopentothemtodecidehowtheywanttoact.

Nowlet’stakeaquicklookattheacDviDesincludedintheSustainABLEkit.FutureBuilderisacollaboraDvegamethatchallengesplayerstobuildapretendsustainablecommunity.Theydrawcardstodiscoverwhattobuild,anduseresourceblockstobuildatowerthatrepresentstheircommunity.Theyneedtobuildsustainably,ortheircommunitywillcollapse!TheprimarylearningobjecDvesofthisacDvityis:Sustainablecommuni1esmeettheneedsofpeople,theplanet,andtheeconomy.

MyCommunityisacreaDveacDvitythatchallengesparDcipantstothinkaboutwaystoimprovetheircommunityandmakeitmoresustainable.TheyconsiderdifferentwaysthatpeoplecanimproveareasoftheircommuniDes,thendrawapicturethatillustrateshowtheycouldmaketheirowncommunitymoresustainable.TheprimarylearningobjecDvesofthisacDvityis(again):Sustainablecommuni1esmeettheneedsofpeople,theplanet,andtheeconomy.

SystemsScrambleisawhole-bodygamethatallowsplayerstoexperiencehowpartsinasysteminteract.Theywilldiscoverthatinasystem,thingsarealwayschanging!TheprimarylearningobjecDvesofthisacDvityis:Systemsthinkinghelpsusunderstandourcomplexworldandplanforamoresustainablefuture.
