“Look at the bear,” said Tara. “I want it!”Mum pretended she couldn’t hear.

“Why?” asked Tara. “But I want things.”“I can’t afford to buy things, just like that, whenever you want them,” said Mum.

They went to the pet shop. “Look, a hamster,” said Tara. “I want it!”Mum said, “Oh Tara, you can’t just have EVERYTHING you want!”

“I want to talk to you about pocket money,” said Mum.“Now you are old enough, I am going to give you pocket money each week, so you can save up and buy the things you want, yourself.”“We are also going to give you some money for doing some little jobs around the house if you want,” said Mum.Tara was very excited. She was going to get £2 a week, and a new money box to save it up in. Tara thought about the things she could buy. What would you like to buy?

They went to the cafe. Tara had a milkshake and Mum had a cup of tea.Mum had a look on her face that usually meant they were going to have a ‘serious talk’.“Did I do something wrong?” asked Tara.

“You could start saving up for that hamster, yourself,” said Mum.“Oh, how long will that take?” asked Tara. “We could work it out together,” said Mum.
