I promise to model the way so that others may follow, sharing their story and bridging gaps.

I promise to make this personal and commit to the Bristol-Myers Squibb mission to extend and enhance human life in word and deed.

I promise to act as a human citizen by acknowledging my responsibility to impart others with the learnings and the tools I have received by knowing the symptoms of breast cancer.

I promise to love the women of South Africa as I love myself and to serve as a supporter of our mission, a driver of change, and a catalyst for living a longer and healthier life by knowing how to detect the symptoms of breast cancer early and receiving the proper medical treatment.

My name is Wema Hoover and I have made my promise.”

Elliot Sigal, MD, PhD, Pres & CSO

It is my pleasure to announce the “I Promise” Campaign, a program aimed at advancing breast cancer education and awareness in Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. This program is sponsored by the African-American Affinity Group (AAAG). The “I Promise” Campaign builds on the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation’s SECURE THE FUTURE program, which works with community partners to develop new approaches to address health care disparities in hard hit communities where resources are limited.  You can help by making a contribution through the Bristol-Myers Squibb Employee Giving Program website to The Lydia Tree, our nonprofit partner, and encouraging your colleagues and friends to do the same. The Foundation will match all U.S. employee donations dollar-for-dollar.

15

The mission of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation is to help reduce health disparities by strengthening community-based health care worker capacity, integrating medical care and community-based supportive services, and mobilizing communities in the fight against disease.

John Damonti, VP Corporate Philanthropy

The BMS AAAG has partnered with a 501(c)(3) organization, The Lydia Tree, to apply for a grant from the BMSF to secure funds for the initial purchase of 100 breast self-examination teaching models. Additional funds will be raised through the BMS Employee Giving Program to purchase more teaching models and other resources to support the project.
