“I AM THE VINE, YOU ARE THE BRANCHES” (John 15:51)
JULY/AUGUST 2013
“THE TRANSFIGURATION”
The second great feast of the summer is the Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ, which is celebrated
on August 6th. Jesus takes his three most intimate disciples with him. Sometimes God reveals Himself to
sinners in an extraordinary way, but, in general, the privilege of contemplating God, and of entering into
the joy of the Transfiguration is reserved for those who have followed the Master long and faithfully.
Jesus leads his disciples to a high mountain. Before attaining the light of the Transfiguration, the hard path
of asceticism is necessary.
Jesus’s normal appearance is changed. His face shines ‘as the sun’. His clothes become ‘white as the
light’. It is in this that the Transfiguration consists. The Jesus that the disciples knew well and whose
looks, in ordinary life, did not differ radically from those of other people, suddenly appears to them in a
new and glorious form. In our inner life, a similar experience can happen in three ways. Sometimes our
inward image of Jesus becomes (to the eyes of the soul) so luminous, so resplendent, that we seem truly to
see the glory of God in his face: somehow the divine beauty of Christ becomes for us an object our
experience. Or, sometimes, we feel with great intensity that the inner light, that light which is given to all
men born into the world as a guide to their thought and action, is identified with the person of Jesus Christ:
the power of the moral law becomes fused with the person of the Son, and the attraction of sacrifice makes
us glimpse the sacrificed Saviour, and hear his call. Sometimes, too, we become aware of Jesus’s presence
in some man or woman whom God has set in our path, especially when it is given to us to bring
compassion to their sufferings: then, in the eyes of faith, that man or woman is transfigured into Jesus
Christ. From this last example, one could evolve a precise spiritual method, a method of transfiguration
which could apply to everyone, everywhere and always.
Next to Jesus appear Moses and Elijah. Moses represents the law. Elijah the prophets. Jesus is the
fulfillment of all law and of all prophecy. He is the final completion of the whole of the Old Covenant; He
is the fullness of all divine revelation.
Moses and Elijah speak with Jesus of his coming Passion. Usually, not enough attention is paid to this
aspect of the Transfiguration. In Jesus’s life, the glorious mysteries cannot be separated from the mysteries
of suffering. It is when he is preparing to go to his Passion that his is transfigured. In our own life, we
shall not enter in to the joy of the Transfiguration unless we accept the Cross.

We hope you all have a wonderful summer and we look forward to seeing you all on September 8th as we begin a new Church School year. Kally Attard and Patricia Bangos, Directors
St. John the Baptist Greek Dance Groups
The Greek Dance groups had a great year! Thank you to all the parents for their continued support. We truly could not have had such a successful year without your help and assistance. Some highlights of the year include competing at FDF, our great New Year’s Eve party, Preview Sunday event, and performing at our church festival. This year, we had the additional honor of two of our groups, Antromiti and Dynami, being asked to perform at Disneyland’s OPA! A Celebration of Greece. For two days, our groups entertained the crowds at Disneyland with their beautiful dances and costumes! It was a rare opportunity that the dancers will always remember! Thank you to the parents who helped make it all possible by delivering costumes, helping dancers with their costumes, providing snacks, escorting dancers around the park, chaperoning dancer’s activities, to name a few. Our next Greek Dance year starts on September 8, 2013. Registration will be available online this year during the summer. Additional information will be forth coming. We hope you all have a wonderful summer and we look forward to seeing you all in September!
Thank you—Our community experienced a great loss with the passing of Father Nicholas. Not only was
he our spiritual advisor, he was a friend of Philoptochos. Philoptochos came together to honor Father
Nicholas’ memory when we hosted the coffee hour following the Trisagion. Thank you to everyone in
our Community who volunteered and who contributed paximadia, fruit and other items for that evening.
I also want to thank the GOYA members who helped set-up the Hall. We will miss Father Nicholas. May
his Memory be Eternal.
Father Hadjis Scholarship—Congratulations to Anastasia Selberis, our 2013 Father Hadjis Scholarship
recipient. We wish you all the success in your future educational endeavors.
Summer Coffee Hour Volunteers Needed—we’re looking for volunteers to help serve coffee on
Sundays during July and August. Contact Raza Kitsigianis or stop by the Coffee Bar to sign up.
Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure—We invite everyone in our community to join Philoptochos on
Sunday, September 22nd for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure at Newport Fashion Island. Southern
California Philoptochos members, family and friends come together each year to participate in this 5K
walk and raise funds to raise awareness and fight breast cancer. More information coming soon.
Board of Directors—I want to thank the outgoing 2011-2013 Board of Directors for their time and
commitment to Philoptochos: Joyce Attard, Freda Chrest, Electra Christ, Christina Dourbetas, Penny
Hatzis, Jerry Kallaos, Argie Karpontinis, Raza Kitsigianis, Marcia Melanitis, Mary Ohanian, Christine
Pappas, Julie Sarres, Bess Stavrakes and Linda Wronski. It has been a pleasure working side-by-side with
you for the past two years on the Board. I’m writing this article the week before we have elections for the
2013-2015 Board of Directors. We will announce the new Board of Directors soon after the meeting.

Please remember that is a language school and not a traditional age school. A 10-year-old student can be in 1st level
along with 7-year-old students. A student does not automatically progress to the next grade without having passing the basic exams of the current class. This ensures that the language is being taught properly and that the student fully
realizes the education received.
