Hurricane Sandy made landfall about 50 miles south of Jericho, NY at about 9 p.m. Monday.

Tuesday, the morning after Hurricane Sandy peaked with gusts of up to about 80 mph in Jericho, downed trees were found on nearly every block of East Birchwood, a community of 1,200 homes.

Jericho has a population of about 12,000 and about 4000 homes and condos in total are located in the 11753 zip code covering Jericho.

These photos show just one community on Long Island, but these scenes were common throughout Nassau County and Suffolk County after Hurricane Sandy.

No estimates are yet available about how many homes were hit by trees in Nassau and Suffolk.

This photo of Merrick, which is on the south shore of Long Island, was sent by my daughter’s friend. Her family does not own a boat.
