Hymn: TiS 580
1. Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us
o’er the world’s tempestuous sea;
guard us, guide us, keep us, feed us,
for we have no help but thee;
yet possessing every blessing
if our God our Father be.
2. Saviour, breathe forgiveness o’er us;
all our weakness thou dost know;
thou didst tread this earth before us,
thou didst feel its keenest woe:
lone and dreary, faint and weary,
through the desert thou didst go.
3. Spirit of our God, descending,
fill our hearts with heavenly joy,
love with every passion blending,
pleasure that can never cloy:
thus provided, pardoned, guided,
nothing can our peace destroy.
James Edmeston
1791–1867
Greeting: The Lord be with you.
AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)
3
Sentence: There is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or
mother or father or children or fields, for Jesus’ sake, who will not receive a
hundredfold now in this age, with persecutions, and in the age to come
eternal life. Mark 10.29–30
Prayer of Preparation:
As we gather as God's people let us pray together:
Almighty God,
to whom all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from whom no secrets are hidden:
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration
of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name,
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Summary of the Commandments:
‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the
Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your
mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first
commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as
yourself.’
4
The Confession
Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's
forgiveness.
Merciful God, our maker and our judge,
we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
and in what we have failed to do:
we have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;
we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.
Father, forgive us.
Strengthen us to love and obey you
in newness of life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Absolution {Celebrant}
Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him
in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen
you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.

Gloria – Ushaw Setting (Alan Rees)
CHOIR: Glory, Glory to God, Glory to God in the highest,
ALL:
and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father.
6
Prayer of the Day
Merciful God, in your Son you call not the righteous but sinners to repentance:
draw us away from the easy road that leads to destruction, and guide us into
paths that lead to life abundant, that in seeking your truth, and obeying your will,
we may know the joy of being a disciple of Jesus our Saviour; who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD
Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)
First Reading: JOB 23.1-9, 16-17 1Then Job answered:
2‘Today also my complaint is bitter; his hand is heavy
despite my groaning. 3O that I knew where I might find him, that I might come
even to his dwelling! 4I would lay my case before him, and fill my mouth with
arguments. 5I would learn what he would answer me, and understand what he
would say to me. 6Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No;
but he would give heed to me. 7There an upright person could reason with him,
and I should be acquitted for ever by my judge. 8‘If I go forward, he is not there;
or backward, I cannot perceive him; 9on the left he hides, and I cannot behold
him; I turn to the right, but I cannot see him. 16
God has made my heart faint; the
Almighty has terrified me; 17
If only I could vanish in darkness, and thick darkness
would cover my face!
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD
7
Psalm 22.1-5, 11-13
1 My God, my God, why have you forsaken me:
why are you so far from helping me and from the words of my groaning?
2 My God, I cry to you by day, but you do not answer:
and by night also I take no rest.
3 But you continue holy:
you that are the praise of Israel.
4 In you our forebears trusted:
they trusted, and you delivered them;
5 To you they cried and they were saved:
they put their trust in you and were not confounded.
11 O go not from me, for trouble is hard at hand:
and there is none to help.
12 Many oxen surround me:
fat bulls of Bashan close me in on every side.
13 They gape wide their mouths at me:
like lions that roar and rend.
Second Reading: HEBREWS 4.12-16 12
Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged
sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to
judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13
And before him no creature is
hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must
render an account. 14
Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed
through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our
confession. 15
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with
our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we
are, yet without sin. 16
Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with
boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Response: Hear the word of the Lord,
THANKS BE TO GOD

Gradual Hymn: TiS 240
1. All go to God when they are sorely placed:
they plead to him for help, for peace, for bread,
for mercy, for them sinning, sick or dead.
We all do so in faith or unbelief.
2. We go to God when he is sorely placed,
find him poor, scorned, unsheltered, without bread,
whelmed under weight of evil, weak or dead.
We stand by God then, in his hour of grief.
3. God comes to us when we are sorely placed,
body and spirit feeds us with his bread.
For everyone, he as a man hangs dead:
forgiven life he gives all through his death.

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet
our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.
The Lord be with you
AND ALSO WITH YOU
The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Mark chapter 10 beginning
at the 17th
verse.
GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.
17
As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and
asked him, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ 18
Jesus said
to him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 19
You know
the commandments: “You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery;
You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud;
Honour your father and mother.” ’ 20
He said to him, ‘Teacher, I have kept all
these since my youth.’ 21
Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, ‘You lack
one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will
have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’ 22
When he heard this, he was
shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. 23
Then Jesus
looked around and said to his disciples, ‘How hard it will be for those who have
wealth to enter the kingdom of God!’ 24
And the disciples were perplexed at
these words. But Jesus said to them again, ‘Children, how hard it is to enter
the kingdom of God! 25
It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a
needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.’ 26
They
were greatly astounded and said to one another, ‘Then who can be
saved?’ 27
Jesus looked at them and said, ‘For mortals it is impossible, but not
for God; for God all things are possible.’ 28
Peter began to say to him, ‘Look, we
have left everything and followed you.’ 29
Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, there is
no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or
children or fields, for my sake and for the sake of the good news, 30
who will
not receive a hundredfold now in this age—houses, brothers and sisters,
mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions—and in the age to come
eternal life. 31
But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.’
Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,
PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

THE MINISTRY OF BAPTISM
The priest invites all candidates for baptism, and their parents and godparents
to come forward and to stand in view of the congregation. Baptism is the gift of our Lord Jesus Christ. When he had risen from the dead,
Jesus commanded his followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. We have
come together today in obedience to that command. In baptism, we are joined
to Christ, and made members of his body, the Church.
We welcome you Karly as you come to be baptised. Children are baptised in response to God’s all-embracing love.
We welcome you Mackenzie, your parents Karly and Rowan, and your
godparents Clint and Kristen.
We welcome you Hunter, your parents Carly and Nico, and your godparents
Andrew, Kate and Katrina.
We welcome you Jenson, your parents Anabel and Justin, and your
godparents Jane and Jean. Parents and Godparents who bring children for baptism must express their own
trust and commitment to the promises of God, and their intention to bring up
the children in the faith and practice of the Church. The parents and godparents are asked these questions:
Q/ Will you accept the responsibilities placed upon you in bringing Mackenzie,
Hunter and Jenson for baptism?
A/: I will.
Q/ Are you willing to answer on behalf of these children?
A/: I am.
Q/ By your own prayers and example, by your friendship and love, will you
encourage these children in the life and faith of the Christian community?
A/: I will, with God’s help.
THE DECISION Before God and this congregation, I ask you to affirm that you turn to Christ and
reject all that is evil.
Q/ Do you turn away from all evil thoughts, words and actions?
A/: I turn away from them all.
Q/ Do you repent of your sins?
A/: I repent of my sins.
13
Q/ Do you turn to Christ?
A/: I turn to Christ.
Q/ Will you each, by God’s grace, strive to live as a disciple of Christ, loving God
with your whole heart, and your neighbour as yourself, until your life’s end?
A/: I will, with God’s help.
Priest to the congregation: You have heard our brothers and sisters respond to
Christ. Will you support them in this calling?
All: We will.
Let us pray: Grant, merciful God, that Karly, Mackenzie, Hunter and Jenson may
be so united with Christ in baptism that your new nature may be raised up in
them where the fruit of your Spirit may grow and flourish. Amen.
Give to their families and friends the desire to share what you have revealed in
your Holy Gospel. May they know Christ’s forgiving love and continue in the
fellowship and service of his church. May they proclaim, by word and example,
the good news of God in Christ. Amen.
THE BAPTISM The Baptism party gathers around the font, the congregation stand.
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Priest: We give you thanks that at the beginning of creation your Holy Spirit moved
upon the waters to bring forth light and life. With water you cleanse and replenish
the earth; you nourish and sustain all living things. Through the waters of the Red
Sea you led your people by Moses out of slavery into freedom, and brought them
through the river Jordan into the land of promise. We give you thanks for your Son,
Jesus Christ: for his baptism by John, for his anointing in the Holy Spirit, and that
through the deep waters of death Jesus delivered us from our sins and was raised
to new life in triumph. We give you thanks for the grace of the Holy Spirit who
forms us in the likeness of Christ and leads us to proclaim your kingdom.
And now we give you thanks that you have called Karly, Mackenzie, Hunter and
Jenson to new birth in your Church through the waters of baptism. Pour out your
Holy Spirit in blessing and sanctify this water so that those who are baptized in it
may be made one with Christ in his death and resurrection. May they die to sin, rise
to newness of life, and continue for ever in Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we
give you praise and honour in the unity of the Spirit, now and for ever, Amen.
14
The affirmation of faith
Priest: I ask the congregation to join with the parents and godparents in affirming
as yours the faith of the church.
Do you believe in God the Father?
A/: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
Priest: Do you believe in God the Son?
A/: I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by
the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was
crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he
rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of
the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
Priest: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?
A/: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of
Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting. Amen.
Priest: This is the faith of the Church.
A/: This is our faith: We believe in one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Each candidate is in turn brought to the baptismal waters.
Priest: Karly Shanel / Mackenzie Scarlett / Hunter William / Jenson Phoenix, I
baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
A/: Amen.
After each baptism we sing together the Alleluia:
I anoint you with the oil of chrism and sign you with the sign of the cross to show
that you are marked as Christ’s own forever. (Oil that has been blessed by the bishop is used in the anointing to symbolize being chosen in
God, as were the priests and prophets of the Old Testament, and the New Testament
understanding that we are all anointed in the Spirit through belief in Christ.)
Live as a disciple of Christ; fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith.
People: Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in
glory.
15
Priest: God has called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
People: Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father.
Priest: God has called you into his church.
People: We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us of the
body of Christ, as a child of the one heavenly Father, and as an inheritor of the
kingdom of God.
THE GREETING OF PEACE
Priest: In baptism, God has made us one in Christ.
People: His Spirit is with us.
Priest: The peace of the Lord be always with you.
People: And also with you. A greeting of peace is exchanged with those around.
16
Offertory Hymn: TiS 520
1. Lord, enthroned in heavenly
splendour,
first-begotten from the dead,
you alone our strong defender,
lifting up your people’s head:
alleluia, alleluia,
Jesus, true and living bread.
2. Here our humble homage pay we,
here in loving reverence bow;
here for faith’s discernment pray we,
lest we fail to know you now:
alleluia, alleluia,
you are here, we ask not how.
3. Though the lowliest form now veils
you
as of old in Bethlehem,
here as there your angels hail you,
branch and flower of Jesse’s stem;
alleluia, alleluia,
we in worship join with them.
4. Paschal Lamb, your offering, finished
once for all when you were slain,
in its fullness undiminished
shall for evermore remain,
alleluia, alleluia,
cleansing souls from every stain.
5. Great High Priest of our profession
through the veil you entered in;
by your mighty intercession
grace and mercy you can win:
alleluia, alleluia,
only sacrifice for sin.
6. Life-imparting heavenly manna,
stricken rock with streaming side,
heaven and earth with loud hosanna
worship you, the Lamb who died,
alleluia, alleluia,
ris’n, ascended, glorified!
George Hugh Bourne
1840–1925 alt.
17

your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for
your glory and for the service of your kingdom.
BLESSED BE GOD FOR EVER.
THE PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
Priest: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Priest: Lift up your hearts:
People: We lift them to the Lord.
Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give him thanks and praise...
Priest: ... Forever praising you and singing:
ALL:
CHOIR: God of power and God of might.
ALL:
CHOIR: Heaven and earth are full, are full of your glory.
ALL:
CHOIR: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
ALL:
18
Priest: …. do this as often as you drink it in remembrance of me
Priest: in songs of never ending praise:
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.
19
THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND THE COMMUNION
{Celebrant} We break this bread to share in the body of Christ.
We who are many are one body,
For we all share in the one bread.
The Choir sings the Agnus Dei
Come let us take this holy sacrament of the body and blood of Christ in
remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith
with thanksgiving.
Baptised Christians who receive communion in their own church
are invited to share communion with us.
Communion wine may be received:
(a) from the common cup from the first of the two Eucharistic Assistants.
(b) by intinction from the second of the Eucharistic Assistants where a small
part of the wafer is carefully dipped in the wine, or
(c) from an individual glass on request from the first Eucharistic Assistant.
Or you may choose to receive the wafer only (Communion in one kind).
The Choir Sings “Ave Verum Corpus”, Byrd
THE SENDING OUT OF GOD'S PEOPLE
Post-Communion Prayer
Prayer of self-offering
Father, we offer ourselves to you
as a living sacrifice
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Send us out in the power of your Spirit
to live and work to your praise and glory. AMEN
20
Final Hymn: TiS 387
1. Christ is alive! Let Christians sing.
The cross stands empty to the sky.
Let streets and homes with praises ring;
Love, drowned in death, shall never die.
2. Christ is alive! No longer bound
to distant years in Palestine,
but saving, healing, here and now,
and touching every place and time.
3. In every insult, rift and war,
where colour, scorn or wealth divide,
Christ suffers still, yet loves the more,
and lives, where even hope has died.
4. Women and men, in age and youth
can feel the Spirit, hear the call,
and find the way, the life, the truth,
revealed in Jesus, freed for all.
5. Christ is alive, and comes to bring
good news to this and every age,
till earth and sky and ocean ring
with joy, with justice, love, and praise.
