If you do not have a formal Strategic Plan, then create a minimum of three Strategic Goals. These goals should be:

affordable obtainable.

Fundraising should NOT be crisis-driven.

11

Fundraising should be Proactive

12

• Potential donors look for organizations who are authentic and communicate with them as donors.

• Successful organizations view the community as a partner in their work.

• Successful organizations invite others into the process and value what they learn from them.

13

“How will this help me raise more money?”

14

• You have to want to do this. This is time and resource extensive.

• You have to begin thinking as a donor.

• You have to answer the question “Why should I care?” (in “donorese”, rather than “missionflow”)

15

Its all about the donor

16

Step 1:

Understand What …

You Need The Funds For

17

Step 2:

Create a Case for Support

• Renovate our kitchen

Development Plan

• 10% increase in donors

• 10% increase in new dollars

• $1 million Capital Campaign

Your Development efforts should be based on building ongoing relationships, which are a

year-round, gradual, open ended,

multi dimensional process.

21

Step 4:

Manage, Understand and Useyour Donor

and Contact Information

• There needs to be regular on going discussion about implementation and evaluation, about your progress and setbacks at the Board, Committee and Staff level.

• There needs to be ongoing in-house training around your donor management system and get the staffs input on how it can be better used.

• Your budgetary process needs to be reflective and supportive of this culture.

• Training times need to be built in. Solicitor Training, Marketing, etc.

• Understand and accept, your success and long term sustainability is dependent on your donors.
