How to read a Map Notes

How to read a Map

Title

• A map ALWAYS has a title to tell the reader what information its showing.

• A compass rose shows the direction north, east, south and west.

• The letters N,E,S and W are placed to indicate direction. (NW, NE, SW, SE)

Scale Bar

• Shows the actual distance between points on the map.

• Ex. 1 inch = 1 Mile

Map Key or Legend

• Shows the symbols and colors used on the map and what each one means

Type of Maps

• Cartographers: a person who makes maps

• They have to be very accurate and show landmarks on a map such as oceans, or buildings.

Physical Map

• Shows only the natural landforms such as mountains, rivers and fields.

Political Map• Shows man-made

borders between countries, cities and towns. They use different colors for these boundaries.

On page 10 of your ISN1. Map one floor of your house. Draw

the rooms on the grid sheet provided, include doors, windows and basic/main furnishings. For example, a couch or bed.

2. In your key, explain what the symbols mean. Ex. is a sink.
