ManyresearchersseeksaferalternativestoethidiumbromidefortheirDNAgels.Anumberofdyeshavebeenmarketedasbeingsafebecausetheyarenotmutagenicinlabtests.Butmostoftheseso-calledsafegelstainscontainwell-known,old-fashionedfluorescentdyes,manyofwhicharehighlymembranepermeable,sotheypenetrateandbindDNAinsideoflivecellswithinminutes.Someofthesedyes,likeacridineorange,areknowntobehighlytoxictocells,andalsocanpotentiateDNAdamagebyUVlightandothermutagens.SeeTable1,otherside,foracomparisonofthecellpermeability,toxicity,andsensitivityofGelRed™andGelGreen™withotherethidiumbromidealternatives.
