The GJW Titmuss Customer Questionnaire

Over a two month period in 2014, the GJW team launched a customer questionnaire to find out how much you spend on your beloved dogs.

Promoted via Facebook, Survey Monkey and our own database, we managed to gather responses from 103 dog lovers.

This presentation looks at the key findings – we hope you enjoy!

Age and Gender of Respondents

Most respondents were aged 36-45.

86% of respondents were female, 14% were male.

This shows a significant divide in the gender of dog owners!

Number of Dogs Owned

We discovered that the majority of you own one dog (43%), with just 7% owning more than five. That’s a lot of waggy tails!

This shows us that it is much more common to have just one or two dogs – although it was interesting to see that more owners have four or more dogs than have three!

Age Of Dogs

From your responses, the youngest pup was just 1.

The oldest dog was the ripe age of 14!

Gender Of Dogs

There is not much difference between the number of female dogs owned over male.

38 respondents (37%) owned one or more female dogs, 31 owners (31%) own just male dogs, whilst 32 (32%) have both female and male pets.

Most Popular Breeds

There were plenty of lovely breeds that you own, including lots of cross breeds!

27% of respondents owned at least one cross-breed dog! Variety is the spice of life, after all.

Some of the most common pure breeds were:

• Labradors - 15%• Terriers (including Staffordshire Bull Terriers,

Border Terriers and Tibetan Terrier) – 13%• Lurcher - 4%

Training CostsJust 20% of respondents take their dog on training courses or classes.

The vast majority of these respondents (70%) spend £0-£50 on training for their pets, whilst 30% (6 people) spend £51-£100.

This means that many dog owners do not see the value in professional training, perhaps feeling able to teach their dogs themselves.

Food (Excluding Treats)

Getting the right food in the right quantities for your dogs is incredibly important.

Our questionnaire found that 42% of dog owners spend between £21 -£40 a month on dog food, whilst 9% spend over £81 per month.

This would suggest that pet owners are not willing to spend premium amounts on dog food, but are also avoiding the cheap alternatives.

Accessories

We asked owners which accessories they purchased for their pets monthly.

The choices included:

• Water/Feeding Bowls• Beds & Crates• Pet Gates• Kennels• Muzzles, Collars and Leads

Accessories

We discovered that 75% of people spend between £0-£20 per month on doggy accessories, whilst 20% spend between £21 and £40.

This is likely because the right products will last, so there is no need to keep investing a lot month on month.

Vet Costs

Sometimes our pets get poorly, and as a responsible owner you will need to pay vet costs to ensure your dog is returned to full health.

41% of respondents had a poorly dog in the past year. This shows us that unfortunately it is quite common for your pets to become unwell.

This can be due to a variety of reasons such as allergies or digestive issues.

Vet Costs

Of these 41 respondents, 22% of them spent up to £100 on vet bills in the year, whilst the same number spent £101 -£200.

This shows that whilst vet bills can be expensive, they are well worth the investment to look after your waggy tailed friend.

Insurance

Many pet owners opt for pet insurance to help with costs of care.

Our survey found that 33% of owners spend £0-£100 on pet insurance per year.

Insurance

This is followed by 20% who spend £201 - £300.

This shows us that people are willing to invest in their dog’s wellbeing, and that the expense is worthwhile should your pet become unwell.

To keep your dogs cleaned and groomed, you need to invest in the right cleaning products.

These products can differ by breed and individual needs for your pet.Our survey showed us that 80% of owners spend £0-£20 on cleaning products per month.

This shows us that it doesn’t need to cost a fortune to keep a dog spick and span!

Cleaning

Perceptions of Doggy Care Costs

As a dog owner, you might feel that all the costs pile up. However, most dog owners questioned (73%) felt that the amount they spend is average.

Only 14% felt the spend was very high, closely followed by 13% who found the price low.

Toys

Every dog loves a toy to play with – from a tug rope to a squeaky ball.

A whopping 91% of respondents spend £0 - £20 on dog toys per month.

Three lucky dogs have £41 - £60 spent on them.

This shows us that your dogs have plenty to play with to keep them occupied!

Gifts

Everybody loves a gift sometimes – especially our pets.

It’s no surprise then that 83% of dog owners will spend money on gifts for their dogs

Gifts

36% spend £21 - £40 per year on gifts for their dogs.

Nine pampered pooches (11%) get over £81 spent on luxuries. Lucky things!

From this, we can see that your dogs are very well looked after and loved.

Treats & Snacks

Treating your dog for good behaviour is a crucial part of raising and training your pet, and allowing them to have limited snacks throughout the day keeps them occupied and satisfied.

There is no need to spend lots of money on these extras though, as 74% of our respondents spend just £0 - £20 a month on them.

Perceptions Of Toys, Gifts and Treats Costs

Much like the cost of caring for your pet, the majority of owners felt that the amount they spend on items such as toys, gifts and treats is average (70%), rather than being higher or lower than their expectations.

Other Costs

37% of respondents stated that they also incur other costs in the upbringing of their pet(s)

The most common other costs are:

• Flea and wormer treatments (16%)

• Vitamins and supplements (16%)• Walkies (11%)• Doggy day care (8%)• Boarding (8%)
