The Teen Age Years

DEVELOPMENTAL TASKS ARE MILE MARKERS

ALONG THE TEENAGE HIGHWAY

Develop mature relationships with peers

of both genders

Adopt Socially Approved Gender Roles

Accept Body as it is and Make the most of the body you have

Become Emotionally Independent from Parents and

other adults

Prepare for marriage and

family life

Select and Prepare for a Career

Adopt priorities in keeping with personal goals and societal

expectations

Adopt socially responsible behaviour                          Responsibility:

Responsibility is doing what you are expected to do, when you are asked to do it or maybe even doing it on your own! Each person is responsible for his or her behaviour and actions.

Task of Adolescents

- Who Am I? - Who are others?

- What can I do or be? - What do I value?

How are Teens and Toddlers alike?

• 13-14 Year Old

• 14-15 Year Old

• 13-15 Year Old

• 15-16 Year Old

• 15 Year Old

• 16-18 Year Old

Of course these ages are not rigid and will vary from individual to individual

• 1-2 Year Old with hunger boredom and impatience

• 2-3 Year Old with stubbornness and rebellion

• 1-3 Year Old Temper Tantrums

• 4 Year old Mouthy, argumentative doing it own way

• 5 Year Old: Internal balance established, more cooperative

• Some say Parents are OK

It’s hard to be (1)5!

What are some things

that might happen in your life to keep you from meeting

these tasks?

Under normal conditions, most teens develop into RESPONSIBLE ADULTS, but sometimes life happens……

1.Death of a parent2.Parents getting a

close family member or friend.

Why do you think normal development is interrupted when one of these events

happen?• Because all the focus is on the trauma

When will normal development be regained?

• When the person is ready.

• It’s different for everyone.

What are some normal activities that help a teen to accomplish

developmental tasks?• Going to school

• Hanging out with positive friends

• Continuing regular activities

• Divorce

• Death

• Low self-esteem

• Moving

• Loss of friends

• Poor role models

• Poor relationships

• Lack of motivation

How can knowing who you are and what you want out of life, help you meet these developmental

tasks?
