How Gabby came to an understanding during her conference.

A.A.13 SIMPLIFY MONOMIALS WITH EXPONENTS OUTSIDE THE PARENTHESIS

October 30, 2013Gabby said, “I don’t know how to do this.”

Mr. Ried said, “What do you know?”

Gabby said, “First Jeffrey told me to multiply 3 x 3 x 3 because there is a 3 here.”

Mr. Ried said, “That is correct but you also need to multiply n2

x n2 x n2”

Gabby came to the conference prepared with a question.

GABBY’S 1ST SOLUTION1st Gabby saw the exponent 3.

2nd Gabby rewrote what was inside the parenthesis 3 times because of the exponent.

3rd Gabby used Genesis’ rule (laws of exponents) and multiplied the coefficients and added the exponents.

GABBY’S RULEAfter finding the correct answer Gabby noticed a pattern. She saw that if she multiplied the exponents: 2 x 3 = 6

x

When you have a term inside parenthesis and it has a exponent outside you need to multiply the exponents and simplify.

GABBY’S 2ND SOLUTIONGabby’s Rule

When you have a term inside parenthesis and it has a exponent outside you need to multiply the exponents and simplify.

1. Remember Gabby’s Rule

When you have a term inside parenthesis and it has a exponent outside you need to multiply the exponents and simplify.

2. Followed the expectations of a conference and came prepared with a challenge.

ERIC’S RULE1st Subtract exponents when dividing powers with the same base.2nd Simplify

GENESIS’ RULEWhen you multiply monomials and they have the same base, add the exponents.

When you have a term inside parenthesis and it has a exponent outside you need to multiply the exponents and simplify.

All of these Rules are known in the math world as the:

LAWS OF EXPONENTS

GABBY’S RULE
