How Do You Like Your Eggs?

When learning English it is handy to know

some of the names of common foods and their

cooking styles.

Eggs are a popular any time of the day food.

Here are the names of some styles of serving

eggs that you will find around the world.

Sunny Side Up

A fried egg

cooked on one

side. A sunny

side up egg can

be served on

toast or rice or

just about

anything.

Over Easy

Fried eggs cooked

fully on the bottom

side then turned

and sealed lightly

on the top side.

Eggs in a Basket

Eggs fried

inside a slice of

bread.

Scrambled Eggs

The eggs are

mixed in a bowl

and then poured

into a pan to fry.

The eggs are

scrambled as

they fry.

Poached Eggs

The eggs are

broken and

cooked whole in

boiling water.

An egg ring or a

poaching cup

might be used.

Eggs Benedict

Poached eggs

on top of ham or

bacon and a

half English

muffin, covered

with Hollandaise

sauce.

Omelette

The eggs are mixed in a bowl and then poured

into a pan to fry. The eggs are folded over and

a filling can be put inside.

Soft Boiled Eggs

The eggs are

boiled for a

limited time (1 ½

- 2 ½ minutes)

to leave the yolk

runny.

Hard Boiled Eggs

The eggs are

boiled for about

10 minutes to

leave the yolk

firm.

Deviled Eggs

Hard boiled

eggs with

mayonnaise and

spices on top.

Shirred Eggs

Shirred eggs,

also known as

baked eggs, are

eggs that have

been baked in a

flat-bottomed

dish.

Chinese Steamed Eggs

Chinese

steamed eggs,

or water egg,

are beaten

similar to an

omelette then

steamed.

French Toast

French toast is

a dish of bread

soaked in

beaten eggs

and then fried. It

can be covered

in sugar or

anything sweet.

Quiche

Quiche is a

savoury, open-

faced pastry crust

with a filling of

savoury custard

with cheese, meat,

seafood, and/or

vegetables.

Frittata

Frittata is an

egg-based

Italian dish

similar to an

omelette or

crustless

quiche.

Huevos Rancheros

Fried eggs

served upon

lightly fried corn

tortillas topped

with a tomato-

chili sauce.

Scotch Egg

A Scotch egg

consists of a hard-

boiled egg

wrapped in

sausage meat,

coated in bread

crumbs and baked

or deep-fried.

Egg Tart

Egg tarts are a

kind of custard

tart pastry which

consists of an

outer pastry crust

that is filled with

egg custard and

baked.
