KINDS OF ACCOMMODATION  Hotels

- Can be classified into star system (1-7). A structure that provides sleeping accommodation to travelers and that usually features dining facilities and daily housekeeping service.

Resorts- Cater primarily to leisure travelers. Generally found in four environments: at the beach, near ski areas, in the desert and near (or even in) theme parks and attractions. Usually have facilities for recreational activities such as a swimming pool, tennis courts, golf course and one or two dining facilities. When a resort is especially large, with many facilities and activities covering acres of land, it is called a mega-resort.

RESORTS A resort is a place used for relaxation

 or recreation, attracting visitors for holidays or vacations. Resorts are places, towns or sometimes commercial establishment operated by a single company.

TYPES OF RESORT Seaside Resort- a resort, or resort

town, located on the coast. Where a beach is the primary focus for tourists, it may be called a beach resort.

Ski Resort- a resort developed for skiing and other winter-related sports. Also open for summer activities, it is often referred to as a Mountain Resort.

Spa Resort- a resort for short term residential/lodging facility with the primary purpose of providing individual services for spa-goers to develop healthy habits. Historically many such spas were developed at the location of natural hot springs or sources of mineral waters. Typically over a seven-day stay, such facilities provide a comprehensive program that includes spa services, physical fitness activities, wellness education, healthy cuisine, and special interest programming.

Golf Resort- a resort that caters specifically to the sport of golf, and include access to one or more golf course and or clubhouse. Golf resorts typically provide golf packages that provide visitors with all greens and cart fees, range balls, and accommodations and meals.

Luxury Resort- a resort or more like an expensive vacation facility that is fully staffed and has been rated with five stars. Luxury resorts often boast many visitor activities and attractions such as gold, water sports, spa and beauty facilities, skiing, natural ecology and tranquility. Because of the extent of amenities offered, a luxury resort is also considered a destination resort.

HOTEL It is an establishment that provides paid

lodging on a short-term basis. The provision of basic accommodation,

in times past, consisting only of a room with a bed, a cupboard, a small table and a washstand has largely been replaced by rooms with modern facilities, including en-suite bathrooms and air conditioning or climate control.

 THE STAR CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM IS A COMMON ONE FOR RATING HOTELS. HIGHER STAR RATINGS INDICATE MORE LUXURY.

Stars – this is probably the most known method of classification of hotels.

Today, the hotels often use literal and symbolic denotation to determine their status. Thus, until recent time literal classification was widely used in Greece.

AMONG THE MAIN CRITERIA OF HOTEL CLASSIFICATION ARE AS FOLLOWS: THE ROOM SIZE. For hotel of the lowest segment the

maximum size is about 10 meters, 3* hotels – from 10 meters, 4* hotels – from 14 meters, 5* hotels – from 16 meters.

THE QUALITY OF HOTEL SERVICES. The bigger the <star> rank of the hotel, the more frequent cleaning can be expected. The quality of meals can be also considered in this criterion.

THE HOTEL LOCATION. The area of tourism is important for this criterion. Thus, for the excursion tours the proximity to the historical center is important, for the sea resorts – the proximity to the sea, for spa hotels - privacy and harmonious surrounding.

POPULAR CLASSIFICATION SYSTEMS OFFICIAL HOTEL AND RESORT GUIDE (OHRG) 

Travel Industry classification system ratings are deemed as being comparable around the world, making it easier for professionals in the travel trade. Ten Quality levels which can be divided as follows:

DELUXE Super Deluxe - An exclusive and expensive luxury hotel

offering the highest standard of service, accommodation and facilities. Establishments in this category are among the world’s top hotel like Burj Al Arab in Dubai, UAE.

Deluxe – With a minimum rated accommodation unlike the superior deluxe, less grand and offer more reasonable rate. (Mandarin Oriental Hotel Manila, Dusit Thani and Manila Hotel.)

Moderate Deluxe – With fine accommodations and public rooms. In some cases the hotel maybe well-established famous name like Walt Disney World Hotels.

FIRST CLASS Superior First Class – an above average hotel, maybe an exceptionally well

maintained older hotel, designed for first class market with some outstanding features. (Heritage Hotel Manila).

First Class – An average comfortable hotel with standardized room, amenities and public areas. (Waterfront Pavilion Hotel Manila)

Limited Service First Class – Limited public areas, food service and facilities.Offer complimentary breakfast and evening cocktails in lobby or in small, informal restaurant. (Most of the hotels in Athens,Greece; Philippines: Eurotel.

Moderate First class – Slightly below average, simple accommodation and public areas. Maybe lacking in some features (e.g. Restaurant), with small and functional rooms. (Minotel Hotel,Switzerland). 

TOURIST• Superior tourist class – Public rooms maybe limited or non-existent.

Often just a place to sleep or with intimate featurest, will satisfy clients, group, and student. (Lotus Garden Hotel Manila)

• Tourist class – should generally used with caution. (Economy Class Hotels in Manila)

• Moderate tourist class – Low budget operation, often quite old and may not be well kept, clients should be always cautioned what to expect. (Cheap Hotels)

BUSINESS HOTELS Are targeted at the needs of business

travelers. Tend to be located in city centres and at airports. Guestrooms are equipped with spacious desks, and internet connection. 

ALL-SUITE HOTELS All accommodation are suites instead

of conventional rooms. May be either leisure or business-oriented or a mix of two. 

MOTEL  Is a type of hotel in which parking is

provided at or near room and the room door gives out onto the parking lot. Usually do not have full dining facilities or provide luggage assistance.

LIMITED-SERVICE LODGING Modestly sized and economically priced

properties. Have rooms that open onto an interior hallway. Rooms are simple with continental breakfast included. Rarely have pools or exercise facilities.

EXTENDED-STAY  Lodging Appeal to those who need

lodging for a week or more. Tend to be spacious and often resemble small apartments with kitchenettes. Attract business people on lengthy business trips. 

CONDOMINIUMS (CONDO)  Individuals own each unit and also pay

fees for upkeep, security, landscaping and maintenance. Can be rented out when owners are not in residence.

LODGES Are usually rural, nature-dominated

settings (e.g. national parks) or exotic places (e.g. the African wilderness).

HOSTEL  An inexpensive alternative for students

and budget travelers. Offer low-costing lodging, Common toilets, kitchen and bathing facilities are shared by all rooms on the floor. 

DUDE RANCHES A unique form of lodging, Convey a

theme of American West. Usually located in the resort areas featuring horse back riding, cattle roundups, outdoor barbeques and other cow-boy type activities. 

CHALET   A wooden dwelling with a sloping roof,

common in Switzerland and other Alpine regions. 

CAPSULE HOTELS Very popular in Japan, They are a little

bigger than a coffin. They are commonly found around their city, near train stations, men who miss the last train home or just aren't sober enough to go home.

ICE HOTEL It is like a big igloo built from enormous

blocks of ice, very popular in Canada, Sweden and Finland. The hotel is a constant -6C inside and the outside temperatures can drop to more then -50C. The rooms are decorated with lovely carvings in the ice. 

TRAIN CABIN Accommodation in the train, normally

for long journey travel. Also known as a "berth”.

CARAVAN A vehicle that consists of beds, toilets

and kitchen. Good for long distance travel, very popular in Europe &USA 

RYOKAN It is a traditional Japanese-style hotel

with high quality service, and often furnished with Japanese-style hot spring baths called "Onsen". High standard Japanese-style breakfast and dinner are often included in the relatively expensive accommodation fee.

CAVE HOTEL  Accommodation in a cave. Commonly

found in Greece, Turkey, Spain & Australia.

UNDERSEA LODGE Accommodation in the sea where you

can view marine life, found in Florida. 

TREE LODGE Accommodation built on a tree,

commonly found in Africa or near a national park.
