InearlyMarch,ourTokyohousewasclosedandthecommunitymovedtoMefuinthesuburbsofOsaka.ThisisourmainhouseinJapan.OnMarch15(IdesofMarch!)ournewmonasterywasblessed,andnamed“St.PauloftheCrossHouse”,notonlyinhonourofourholyfounder,butalsoinmemorythelatePaulMatsumoto,Vice-Provincial.

Onthefollowingdaywemovedintothenewmonastery:

WardBiddle,AndrewfromKorea,DeaconJoeKumoda,Br.XavierShikayamaandmyself.GabrielBrechteaumovedinfromthesouth,Munakata.WardandGabrielareassistedbynursesandsocialworkersonadailybasis.

Thenewmonasteryiscarefullyconstructedtoprovide accessibilitysothatourseniormemberscanliveincommunity.Weallareintheprocessofgettingadjustedtoournew community.

Quiet Louisville...Passionist Earth & Spirit Center

TheEarth&SpiritCenteristryingtohelpfostercalmmindsandopenheartsinthemidstofaturbulentworld.Theyplannedafree,open-to-the-public,outdoormeditationeventatoneofthebusiestplacesin Louisville(downtownon4thstreet,whereThomasMertonhadhisfamousepiphany)atoneofthebusiesttimesoftheyear(noononMay1,inthemiddleofDerbyWeek).Theeventincludedlivemusicandguidedmeditation.

Additionally,theEarth&SpiritCenterreceivedover$22,000ingrantsfromtheU.S.Departmentof AgricultureandtheJeffersonCountySoilandWaterConservationDistricttoremoveinvasivespecies fromthewoods.Thegrantswillalsobeusedtoconstructtwoportable,unheatedgreenhousestoprotectgardencropsfromfrost.ThelatterwillbeusedbyNewHopeInternationalFarm,acommunitygardenprojectforrefugeesontheSacredHeartproperty.Althoughthey’vecontendedwithacold,wetspring,theNewHopegrowershavebeentillingtheirgardens(byhand!!)andarebusygettingstartedforthegrowingseason.

Thisyear’shonoreewasArchbishopChristophePierre,ApostolicNunciototheUnitedStates.“Asa representativeoftheHolyFather,hehasbroughtpeopleofdisparatepoliticalandreligiouspostitionstogetherindialoguetoadvancethecommongood,andchampionedhiscallforencounteringthoseonthemarginsofsociety,tofindinthemtheverypresenceofChrist.”

TheDiakonia AwardwaspresentedtoCarolynParmerandherlatehusband,John.“TheParmerFamilyhasrepresentedtheveryfinestexampleoflayleadershipfortheChurch,embodyingextraordinarycommitmenttoalllevelsofCatholiceducation,andadvocacyfortheroleofwomenintheChurch.”
