LOS ANGELES (FEBRUARY 4, 2014) – The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association today
announced the Hollywood Bowl summer 2014 subscription series and single events for its
93rd season at the historic venue. The Hollywood Bowl – named “Best Major Outdoor
Concert Venue” by Pollstar magazine for the ninth straight year – is one of the most
renowned summer cultural venues in the world and has been the summer home of the Los
Angeles Philharmonic since 1922.
The 2014 summer season spans 15 weeks, from June to September, and features a wide
variety of the world’s greatest artists from all genres of music, with the Los Angeles
Philharmonic at its core. New subscriptions for the Hollywood Bowl 2014 summer season are
available starting today, and the Hollywood Bowl box office opens for single ticket sales on
Sunday, May 4.
“The 2014 Hollywood Bowl summer season presents an extraordinary array of music in one
of the world’s most iconic musical venues,” said Deborah Borda, LA Phil President and Chief
Executive Officer. “The opening of the Hollywood Bowl each year marks the official start of
summer for generations of music lovers across Los Angeles. This year is particularly special
as Gustavo Dudamel celebrates his fifth season as Music Director at the venue where he
made his U.S. debut. He returns with an all-Beethoven program; the third installation of his
signature festival, Americas & Americans, with programs that showcase popular and
classical music as well as film composers from North and South America; and of course, his
summer appearances include opera – this time two of the great Italian operas - Cavalleria
rusticana and Pagliacci. Esa-Pekka Salonen makes a rare visit, and we delight in the return
of dear friends, including Joshua Bell, Yo-Yo Ma, Steve Martin and John Williams.
Anniversaries abound with the 15th year of the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame Opening Night,
the 20th anniversary of DreamWorks Animation and the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ first
Hollywood Bowl performance. Herbie Hancock, entering his fifth season as Creative Chair for
Jazz, and Thomas Wilkins, Principal Guest Conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, also
return, collaborating with some of the world’s greatest musicians. The season begins when,
under the Philharmonic umbrella for the first time, we present the Playboy Jazz Festival.
There is something here for everyone, and we look forward to welcoming you back this
summer.”
LA PHIL MUSIC DIRECTOR GUSTAVO DUDAMEL’S
HOLLYWOOD BOWL APPEARANCES Holder of the Walt and Lilly Disney Chair, Music Director Gustavo Dudamel, in his fifth
summer season under the stars, conducts an all-Beethoven evening; brings together music
from both sides of the hemisphere in his signature festival, Americas & Americans; and
leads a one-night-only double-bill of Italian opera, Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana and
Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci.
The week of July 22, Dudamel is joined by a French trio - Renaud Capuçon, violin; Gautier
Capuçon, cello; and Jean-Yves Thibaudet, piano - in an all-Beethoven program opening with
the composer’s Triple Concerto, and concluding with Symphony No. 5. This performance
marks Gautier Capuçon’s debut at the Hollywood Bowl.
Americas & Americans, a festival first presented during Dudamel’s inaugural 2009/10
season at Walt Disney Concert Hall and revived at the Bowl in 2012, exemplifies his vision
of one American culture across continents. To open his week, Dudamel conducts a special
evening of song and dance, with details forthcoming. Turning an eye towards the influence
of cinematic music, Americas & Americans continues with Noche De Cine, celebrating film
composers from North and South America including Gustavo Santaolalla (Babel, Amores
perros, The Motorcycle Diaries) and a suite from Dudamel’s own score to Libertador. In a
very special weekend program, Latin pop pioneer Gloria Estefan joins the festival with
performances that serves up her hits and classics from the Cuban and American songbooks.
The festival kicks off on July 23 with a program of Latin Jazz.
Gustavo continues to share his lifelong passion for opera with a special night of Italian
masterpieces, Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci. The Los Angeles Philharmonic is joined by
the Los Angeles Master Chorale and Los Angeles Children’s Chorus, and stellar casts that
include Stuart Neill, Michelle DeYoung, Julianna Di Giacomo, Christopher Maltman, Tamara
Mumford and Susan Bickley.

CLASSICAL TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS LOS ANGELES PHILHARMONIC, 8 PM
The Los Angeles Philharmonic performs 10 weeks of exceptional classical programs during
the Hollywood Bowl’s Tuesdays and Thursdays series featuring the world’s biggest
classical stars.
The LA Phil’s summer classical season opens with superstar violinist Joshua Bell
displaying his virtuosity and collaborative skills in solo concerto, chamber music and
more, with help from some of his special friends. The program, led by the wry and
witty Bowl favorite Bramwell Tovey, includes Ravel’s Tzigane and Stravinsky’s
Firebird Suite. (July 8)
Tovey continues the first week of the LA Phil classical season by bringing 20th-
century favorites from Bernstein and Gershwin, acting as both conductor and pianist
for Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Broadway bombshell, singer and actress Megan
Hilty (Smash, Wicked) sings favorite Gershwin tunes. (July 10)
Making a special visit to the Hollywood Bowl, virtuosic pianist Yefim Bronfman
performs one of his signature pieces, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, led by
close collaborator and LA Phil Conductor Laureate Esa-Pekka Salonen. (July 15)
In an evening of firsts, the talented Yuja Wang plays the first piano concertos of
both Shostakovich and Prokofiev for the first time in a single evening. Esa-Pekka
Salonen, continuing his week at the Bowl, takes the theme further by leading the
orchestra in the first symphonies of both composers. (July 17)
A blockbuster French trio – brothers Renaud and Gautier Capuçon (violin and
cello) with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet – joins Music Director Gustavo Dudamel
for an evening of Beethoven, concluding with the composer’s famous Symphony No.
5. (July 22 & 24)
Gustavo Dudamel leads the LA Phil and special guests in an exciting evening that
brings together symphonic music and contemporary sounds from all the Americas in
this Americas & Americans concert. (July 29)
The evening’s program, part of Americas & Americans, celebrates film composers
from North and South America and features film clips from a range of composers
including Argentinean Gustavo Santaolalla (Babel, Amores perros, The Motorcycle
Diaries), as well as a suite from Dudamel’s score to Libertador. (July 31)
The evening sparkles with the instrumental brilliance of rising stars guitarist Miloš
Karadaglić and trumpeter Alison Balsom in zesty Spanish solos, as well as a
special set together, surrounded by colorful orchestral dances. Joshua Weilerstein
conducts. (August 5)
Passionate, inventive violinist Hilary Hahn delves into Brahms’ momentous Double
Concerto partnered with LA Phil Principal Cellist Robert deMaine. Sensational young
Lithuanian conductor Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla - who made her Walt Disney Concert
Hall debut in January 2013 - makes her Bowl debut with Mahler’s “Titan” Symphony.
(August 7)
Hollywood Bowl favorite Leonard Slatkin returns with an all-Russian program
featuring Rimsky-Korsakov’s dazzling and colorful Scheherazade, which perfectly
captures four exotic tales of the Arabian nights. Soloist Gil Shaham performs
Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in a program that also includes Glinka’s Ruslan and
Ludmilla Overture. (August 12)
Legends and masters Yo-Yo Ma and Leonard Slatkin join for an unforgettable
evening of music-making that includes Elgar’s Cello Concerto. (August 14)
Nicholas McGegan brings rain, sun and storm to the Bowl as LA Phil Principal
Concertmaster Martin Chalifour plays Vivaldi’s Four Seasons juxtaposed with
Piazzolla’s tango-flavored Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, topped by Handel’s glorious
Water Music. (August 19)
Nicholas McGegan’s evening of Mozart includes a mixture of the prolific composer’s
mature works, as well as his Piano Concerto No. 22, performed by Inon Barnatan,
and concludes with his “Haffner” Symphony. (August 21)
Beethoven’s ultimate piano concerto, the regal and uplifting Fifth, resounds under
the night sky as irrepressible French conductor Stéphane Denève graces the Bowl
stage with a program featuring Canadian pianist Marc-André Hamelin.
Mussorgsky’s vivid Pictures at an Exhibition caps the evening. (August 26 & 28)
The autumnal glow of Mozart’s Concerto, featuring clarinet wizard Kari Kriikku, is
contrasted with Mendelssohn’s quicksilver visions, for an enchanted evening at the
Bowl under the baton of Ludovic Morlot. (September 2)
Wide-open American vistas meet the magical world of fairy tales in a program
featuring the Hollywood Bowl debut of LA’s own Simone Porter, a violinist currently
studying at the Colburn School. Conductor Ludovic Morlot leads the evening, which
culminates in a vivid new fireworks display. (September 4)
This performance of Holst’s Planets is designed to transport the audience to another
realm: the evocative music will be accompanied by HD images from NASA and JPL
rovers and satellites, as well as computer-generated graphics of the Mars landing
and more. The program opens with the U.S. premiere of Mark-Anthony’s Turnage’s
LA Phil-commissioned Concerto for Drum Kit and Orchestra, performed by Peter
Erskine and led by Bramwell Tovey. (September 9)

THE BOWL WALK
Developed as part of the renovations in the 2004 Hollywood Bowl Shell Project, The Bowl
Walk is a 10-station exhibit around the grounds of the Hollywood Bowl, a Los Angeles
County Park, which beckons visitors to view the venue outside and around the theater. The
exhibit features visual displays throughout the park, presenting information on the cultural
events, history and architecture of the legendary natural amphitheater. The Walk begins at
the entrance of the Bowl (on Peppertree Lane) and concludes inside the theater on the
Fourth Promenade at the top of the hill.
A map of the Bowl Walk can be found at the Hollywood Bowl Museum or
http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/visit/hollywood-bowl-museum/bowl-walk
Ten photographic displays along the pedestrian walkways guide visitors through the park:
The Muse of Music, Peppertree Lane, Pop & Rock at the Hollywood Bowl, Great
Performances, The Shell, The Amphitheater, The Cahuenga Pass Treasure, Flora & Fauna of
the Hollywood Bowl, Picnics & Fireworks, and The View from the Fourth Prom. An accessible
sign fixed in the plaza area, near the Box Office and The Bowl Store, includes Walk
information for patrons with disabilities. The exhibit design is by Hodgetts+Fung. The Bowl
Walk was generously funded by California State Parks Bond Act of 2000 through the Los
Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation.
EDMUND D. EDELMAN HOLLYWOOD BOWL MUSEUM
The Edmund D. Edelman Hollywood Bowl Museum, located on the grounds of the 88-acre
county park, provides a living history of the world-famous venue through a permanent
multimedia presentation and themed exhibits.
LIVE FROM THE BOWL!
Continuing for the 2014 Hollywood Bowl summer season is “Live From The Bowl!” an exhibit
of films, videos and recordings of live concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, and the changing
media technology that has developed and altered dramatically during the Hollywood Bowl’s
92-year history. From an early Victor “talking machine” of the 1920s to a hi-fi component
system of the 60s, live recordings and videos are displayed in individual environments, in
the style of each era, such as:
A 1920s-style ladies dressing room features the very first commercial recording ever
made of a symphony orchestra outdoors - the 1928 RCA Victor album with Eugene
Goossens conducting the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra (made up of members of the Los
Angeles Philharmonic). Selections from the album play on a 1926 Victor “Bluebird”
Victrola.
To represent the dozens of concerts that have been broadcast live from the Bowl -
including classical concerts, benefits, and memorials - a 1930s-era parlor features a
1936 Philco “tombstone” radio playing Fred Astaire’s “They Can’t Take That Away
From Me,” from a CBS broadcast live from the Bowl.
The first national television broadcast from the Hollywood Bowl is represented by an
RCA KCS47 black & white TV playing a clip of The Colgate Comedy Hour (1954).
For the 1960s, the “Mad Men” era is demonstrated by a sophisticated bachelor pad
complete with a high fidelity component system - turntable, amps, pre-amps,
woofers and tweeters - all playing an LP of the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra.
A teenage bedroom of the 1970-80s features clips from The Brady Bunch and Monty
Python at the Hollywood Bowl, as well as audio from popular artists such as Miles
Davis and Pink Floyd.
The modern-day digital age brought many live-concert DVD releases, some of which
are featured in the exhibit, including Van Morrison, Aerosmith, DJ Shadow & Cut
Chemist, Mariachi USA, the Korean Festival, and the webcast of Gustavo Dudamel’s
2009 welcome as Music Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Bienvenido
Gustavo.
BEATLES AT THE BOWL
To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Beatles’ first performance at the Hollywood
Bowl, the Hollywood Bowl Museum will have a special "Beatles at the Bowl" exhibit on the
2nd floor featuring original photographs of the Fab Four at the Bowl, film footage, and
memorabilia.
MUSIC FOR EVERYONE
Taking its cue from a Bowl slogan from the 1950s, the main floor permanent exhibit at the
Hollywood Bowl Museum is called “Hollywood Bowl: Music For Everyone.” This exhibit is
organized into sections on dance; pop, rock, jazz and world music; symphonic music and
opera; architecture and history of the Bowl; and the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. Video
screens are an integral part of the exhibit, featuring hundreds of still photos and extensive
film footage.
HALL OF FAME
The Museum is also home to the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. Visitors can watch videos of
all the inductees including John Williams, Garth Brooks, Stevie Wonder, Brian Wilson, Henry
Mancini, Sarah Chang, Bernadette Peters, Frank Sinatra, and many more.
Summer hours (June 22 - September 29): Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM and
