HOBE SOUNDCOMMUNITY
CHEST
2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
1
Dear Friends of the Hobe Sound Community Chest,
Our most successful year to date! The 2016 Annual Campaign raised $1,428,830. In addition, we received $398,315 of Capital Reserve contributions. Excluding direct fundraising expenses of $42,544, our administrative costs amounted to 11% of total annual campaign funds raised. Financial year-end assets stood at $3,379,399. In May 2017, we were able to award grants totaling $1,199,315 from our successful 2016 campaign.
The Chest is the oldest charitable organization in Martin County. Since 1949, we have provided financial and advisory support to qualifying nonprofit social service agencies that cover the life span from infants to the elderly.
Recently, the Chest has been able to address the community’s long-term needs as well, providing for Hobe Sound’s future generations through promotion of our planned giving program, the Banyan Society, and our capital reserve.
The Chest remains the best way to guarantee your charitable donations directly benefit Hobe Sound neighbors. Our volunteer directors visit and vet the agencies we support, ensuring your contributions are spent wisely.
We thank our donors—the key to our success—along with everyone who works or volunteers for our agencies. And we give special thanks to our staff. In April, after 16 years of dedicated service, Executive Director Suellen Millroy retired, and we now welcome to that position Scott Berry, former Executive Director of Martin County’s Healthy Start Coalition and Father/Child Resource Center.
Sincerely yours,
Robert “Mac” McCormack

DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE REPORT
First and foremost, the Development Committee thanks our donors. They are critical to the Chest’s success, and we are extremely grateful for their contributions.
Also, we thank our dedicated directors, the majority of whom are Leadership Donors, for contacting current and prospective donors. We are especially grateful to Development Committee members from Jupiter Island, Loblolly and other Hobe Sound areas: Nancy Auth, Tom Balling, Mary Ann Casey, Jonathan Colby, Joe Frelinghuysen, Rick Fritz, David Kaugher, Joyce Gay, Marc Gaylord, Ray Gilmartin, Warren Hayford, Fred Kelleher, Sue Lester, Harry MacArthur, Mac McCormack, Linda McGillicuddy, Nathaniel Reed, Bob Simpkins, Libby Thompson, Michelle Tucker, Marilyn Wenner, Eric Wesel and Kevin Wilkinson.

PLANNED GIVING COMMITTEE REPORT
The capital reserve is a financial asset portfolio segregated from Chest operating funds and designated for conservative, long-term investment. It allows us to respond to unforeseen emergencies caused by hurricanes and other natural disasters. It also enables us to participate in our agencies’ capital projects, such as rebuilding or replacing aging physical facilities.
Historically, the Chest's annual campaign has funded our agencies’ operating expenses and this will continue. However, our capital reserve provides another means to help improve the lives of neighbors in need. For example, last year’s $60,000 grant to Habitat for Humanity purchased land for 18 homes in Pettway. And a $500,000 multi-year grant to Banner Lake will help build a new community center.
Joe Frelinghuysen
CAPITAL RESERVE COMMITTEE REPORT
The Banyan Society is our planned giving initiative established to increase the capital reserve. Like our local banyan trees, membership in the Banyan Society will continue to grow roots in the Hobe Sound community, assuring the Chest’s long-term success. Donors may leave a legacy by including the Chest in their estate plans and naming it as a beneficiary of their will, trust, retirement account or life insurance policy.
Donors may also become Banyan Society members by making a current capital contribution of at least $5,000 to the capital reserve or a multi-year pledge in greater amounts. Membership this year grew to 32 donors. A brochure detailing the various options is available at the Chest office.

COMMUNICATION & OUTREACH COMMITTEE REPORT
Each fall, charitable, nonprofit, tax exempt 501(c)(3) organizations submit grant applications for the following year. The Grants Committee considers numerous factors when allocating funds, and our directors’ evaluation reports are essential to this detailed process. Not every agency qualifies for a grant; some receive less than requested and, in certain special situations, some receive more.
In this Annual Report, we list our agencies/organizations in six
categories. Please note the emphasis on educational programs for children and assistance programs for the homeless and elderly. In addition to offering on-going support, the Chest has helped many agencies expand their Hobe Sound services.
Mali Annibali Pam White
GRANTS COMMITTEE REPORT
The Communication and Outreach Committee reaches out to prospective donors from Jupiter Island, Loblolly and other Hobe Sound areas by organizing agency tours and special events. It also oversees publication of the Chest’s promotional materials, press releases, and website, as well as this Annual Report. In 2016, the Chest produced an informational video, available on our website (HobeSoundCommunityChest.org), profiling the Chest and several agencies it supports.

For nearly three decades, Habitat for Humanity of Martin County has worked to revitalize the Banner Lake community. During that time 24 new homes have been built, filling vacant lots and replacing existing homes that were condemned and dangerous.
In March 2016, with financial assistance from the Chest, Habitat purchased more than two acres north of Pettway Street and east ofUS-1. The new neighborhood will partner with Martin County Community Development and the Martin County Board of County Commissioners to install infrastructure including streets, sewer and water lines.
Habitat will fund and build most of the homes. With a challenge grant, the Chest plans to match dollar for dollar the construction costs of the first, and possibly, the second home.
Habitat and the County have held several community meetings, introducing residents to the Habitat program and receiving feedback on the project.
“The residents who have been showing up at the meetings couldn’t be happier,” Habitat Executive Director Margot Graff said. “We've already received several applications from people wanting to be homeowners. We're very excited to have this opportunity and we can’t thank the Chest enough for the chance to revitalize this area.” Habitat will host a ground-breaking ceremony for the projected 18 new homes on November 8, 2017.
BANNER LAKE COMMUNITY CENTER PETTWAY NEIGHBORHOOD
For many years, the Banner Lake Community Center has served as the major hub of activity and support for neighborhood families. But over time, valuable programming such as B.L.A.S.T (Banner Lake After School Time) has increased, and the center has outgrown its cramped, vintage 1930’s building.
Fundraising for a new facility began two years ago, led by former Chest director (2005-2013) Missy Crisp.
The project is expected to cost $2.5 million. The goal is to complete fundraising for construction and raise an additional $1 million for endowment to cover future operating costs. The Chest has committed a total amount of $500,000 to construction and endowment for the new building. Groundbreaking on the new 9,000 square foot, multi-purpose center is targeted for this fall. Construction will take approximately 18 months to complete, with a projected opening in early 2019.
The new building will be located adjacent to the existing center. Plans include a great room for community gatherings and indoor athletics, a kitchen, cafeteria, new classroom space, a state-of-the-art computer lab, library and staff administrative offices.
“This is something the community both needs and deserves," Crisp said. “This community center will give the neighborhood pride and a place to gather, share, learn and celebrate.”

The annual Leadership Reception is the Hobe Sound Community Chest's only event held yearly to thank Leadership donors who give $1,000 or more. During this event, the Hobe Sound Community Service Award is presented to an honoree who has made a significant social service contribution to our community.
Celebrating the best fundraising year in its 68-year history, the Chest connected its major contributors with representatives from some of the nonprofit agencies it supports at the annual Leadership Reception. Members of the Chest’s board of directors honored the generosity of donors who helped raise just over $1.8 million in the 2016 Campaign.
Along with raising $500,000 more than the previous year, the Chest also honored 338 donors who contributed $1,000 or more.

An endowment from the Robert McNeil family foundation in 1996 established the annual Hobe Sound Community Service Award. The recipient, selected from a list of individuals who have made a significant social service contribution to our community, is awarded a commemorative gift and a $5,000 contribution to a charitable organization of the recipient’s choice.
The 2017 honorees are Dana and Kevin Lasher, who realized a dream by founding Hobe Sound’s hometown football team, the Ravens. Launched with a Chest grant in January, 2013, this highly successful sports program now engages 400 children and holds 11 district championships, nine regional championships, two state championships and one national title.
Chest Director Eric Wesel notes, “All along the way, Dana and Kevin met obstacles. But real winners in life persist and every time they met a barrier, they did the work and put in the time to get the job done. The Hobe Sound Community Chest is all about helping those that help our community, and they’ve done that in leaps and bounds.”
