For novice gardeners a few herbs grown in pots can be the perfect introduction to the joys of ‘growing your own’. For those more experienced gardeners, get inspired in the kitchen and try growing different herbs that suit your culinary style.

• Mostherbsinpotscanbegrownindoorsandoutdoors–chooseasunnywindowsillwhengrowingindoors.

• Ifyouwanttotrysomethingdifferent,plantacombinationofVietnamesemint,Thaibasilandlemongrass–allwonderfuladditionstoAsiancooking.

• Oversummersomeherbslikecoriander,parsleyandbasilarepronetogotoseed.Toavoid,wateryourherbsconsistently,regularlypick,removeflowersandremovepartsoftheplantthatgotoseed.Ifyourherbsdogotoseedthereisanupside–theflowersaregreatforbeneficialinsectslikebees,andifyouletthemfullydryoutyoucancollecttheseedsfor next season!

PREPAREChooseaspotoutsidethatisclosetoyourkitchen,orputpotsonasunnywindowsillinside,foreasyaccess.Likebuildingahouseagoodfoundationisthekeytosuccessinyourgarden.Thebetterthesoil,thebetteryourplantswillgrow.IfyouarestartingwithanexistinggardenbeddiginorganicmatterlikesheeppelletsandTui Compost toyoursoil.ThenyoucanaddalayerofTui Herb Mix,afreedrainingplantingmix,richinnitrogentopromotegreen,leafygrowthandcontinuousharvesting.Ifplantinginpotsandcontainers,fillwith Tui Herb Mix.

PLANTIfyou’reafirsttimegardeneryoumayfinditeasiertogrowfromseedlings,ratherthanseeds,althoughseedsareamoreeconomicaloption.Someherbsarebestgrownfromseedinyourgardenorpots,suchascorianderandparsley.Checkseedpacketsorplantlabelsforindividualplantinginstructions.Thebesttimestoplantareearlyinthemorningorlateintheday,sotheplantsaren’texposedtothehotsunstraightaway.Alwayswaterplantswellbeforeandafterplanting.Don’tbeshywhenplantingherbsastheyquitelikecloseneighbours,andyoucanalwaysplantherbsinbetweenotherplantsastheymakegreatspacefillersandcompanionplants.

NOURISHFeedyourherbsandtheywillfeedyou.Plantsusenutrientsfromthesoilastheygrow,soreplenishingthenutrientsensuresyourplantsgrowtotheirfullpotential.FeedyourherbswithTui NovaTec Premiumfertiliser.Wellwatered,wellnourishedherbswillhaveabetterchanceofkeepinginsectpestsanddiseasesatbay.

PROTECTTheweather,weeds,pestinsectsanddiseasescanallimpactonthesuccessofyourherbs.Protectyourplantsfromtheelementswithlayersofmulch,tohelpkeeptheirrootsmoistandkeepyourgardenweedfree.Herbsaren’tgenerallyaffectedbypestsanddiseases,althoughifyourherbsareindoors,lackofsunlightandairflowcanreduceplantvigourandattractinsectpestslikewhitefly.Tocombat,moveyourherbsoutsidewhenyoucan,andifyougetaninfestationtreatwithTui Insect Control for Fruit & Veges.
