Helen Eager – Printmaker

Helen Eager’s large oeuvre of over 250 prints, spanning from the 1970s to today, embodies a dynamic artists’ passion for the medium.

At the South Australian School of Art in the early 1970s, Eager majored in printmaking, with a particular interest in lithography. Soon after graduating Eager joined Watters Gallery, Sydney and over the ensuing years had many solo exhibitions that focused significantly on her printed works.

Her prints from this period depict intimate domestic interiors where objects teeter and furniture slants against intricately patterned wallpaper. The incredible detailing and complexity of colour in these works attests to Eager’s significant skill and dedication as a printmaker.

Eager has playfully commented, “I like to challenge a medium”. In some prints luscious painterly strokes come to the fore, whilst others emphasise a textural line-work. In early works collaged elements create interest on the surface, whilst in recent years Eager has experimented with digital printing.

In her current language of geometric abstraction Eager has continued to produce unique prints that work alongside her practice in other mediums. The processes involved in printmaking – the repetitious layering of different colours, the production in multiples – have also had a strong influence on her paint-ing and drawing, where surfaces are built up out of numerous layers of iridescent oils or of scrawling oil pastels.

Helen Eager the printmaker is coexistent with Helen Eager the painter and Helen Eager the drawer: each practice informs the other.
