Chapter 12:5-11

Another Question to Ponder

Do you understand the role

of chastisement in your

life? (12:5-11).

The Bible Affirms that God Chastens

You shall also consider in your heart, that, as a man chastens his son, so the LORD your God chastens

you (Deut. 8:5)Blessed is the man whom you chasten, O LORD,

and teach him out of your law (Psalm. 94:12) My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD;

neither be weary of his correction: For whom the LORD loves he corrects; even as a father the son in

whom he delights (Prov. 3:11, 12)Heb. 12:7, 8 and As many as I love, I rebuke and

chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. (Rev. 3:19).

His Discipline is Done Verbally

• The prophets warned of impending judgment

• Jesus’ personal rebuke to the unbelieving Jews (Matt 23).

• Also, his rebuke against the churches of Asia (Rev. 2, 3:19) stands out as examples of verbal discipline in the New Testament.

His Discipline is Done Corporally.

• Cast out of Eden.• Global Flood• Sodom and Gomorrah• Korah’s rebellion against

Moses.

• Ananias and Sapphira• Elyamus blinded • Jesus directive against

unrepentant brethren in the church - It was used effectively in 1 Cor. 5.

New Covenant Highlights the Future

Eternal Punishment of the Wicked • Jesus rebukes James

and John • The Day of Judgment

(Matt. 25:31ff) • The Prodigal was spared • Apostles preached about

the God of great patience.

Those who persecuted Christians and were going to be dealt with & The False Prophet cast into a bottomless pit.

The New Testament puts a laser beam on personal

responsibility and congregational liability

For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begins with us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? (1 Pet. 4:17)

All of God’s correction is done out of

love.

Ebbing away of worldliness makes one become partakers of holiness.

Its end result yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness.

Two Things Chastisement Proves:

• God’s love toward us• Confirms our relationship to him.

Three Things Chastisement Accomplishes:

• Corrects our faults • Curbs our temperament

• Separates us for his purpose.

Three Ways the Redeemed Can Respond Toward It

• Despise it. • Faint under it. • Accept it for its intended purpose.
