SAN JOSE STATE LEADERS

>>> Two former San Jose State coaches, Dudley DeGroot and Bob Tichenal, also coached the Lobos. DeGroot was UNM’s coach from 1950-52, compiling a 13-17 record. Tichenal succeeded DeGroot and went 12-16-1 from 1953-55.

>>> New Mexico hasn’t defeated San Jose State since 1976, when the Lobos prevailed 36-30 in Albu-querque, as the Lobos withstood 283 passing yards and two touch-down throws from Spartans quar-terback Steve DeBerg. A DeBerg fumble forced by New Mexico defensive end Bruce Herron and recovered by defensive tackle Andy Frederick was the key play. DeBerg, Herron and Frederick all went on to play in the NFL.

>>> Former UNM player and coach Rocky Long, now the coach at San Diego State, quarterbacked UNM to a 2-0-1 record against San Jose State from 1969-71. The Lobos won in ’69 (27-24) and in ’70 (48-25) and played to a 21-21 tie in ’71.

UNM LEADERS

RON CARAGHER

<<< Caragher is 16-25 in his fourth season at San Jose State. He was 44-22 in six previous seasons at San Diego.

BOB DAVIE

>>> Davie is 19-34 in his fifth year at New Mexico. He was 35-25 in five seasons at Notre Dame (1997-2001).

>>> Spartan freshman linebacker Noah Failauga and UNM sopho-more defensive end Cody Baker were teammates at Eastside Catho-lic High School in suburban Seattle.

>>> Dudley DeGroot, who coached UNM football from 1950-52, had a legendary coaching career at San Jose State. From 1932-39, he went 60-19-9 and led the Spartans to a 13-0 record in ’39. DeGroot coached the NFL’s Washington Redskins in 1944-45.

>>> Three San Jose State players were named to the preseason All-Mountain West Conference team: tight end Billy Freeman, linebacker Christian Tago and punter Michael Carrizosa.

>>> The Spartans finished the 2015 regular season with a 5-7 record and were one of three 5-7 teams to get bowl bids. All three won their bowl games. SJSU defeated Geor-gia State, 27-16, in the AutoNation Cure Bowl.

SPARTAN NOTES

>>> San Jose State linebacker Christian Tago is “just a ball hawk,” said Lobo quarterback Lamar Jordan. “He’s always where the ball is.” Tago didn’t play in the Spartans’ first three games due to a knee injury but saw limited action last week against Iowa State and is expected to play today. >>> UNM coach Bob Davie and SJSU coach Ron Caragher see similarities between former SJSU star back Tyler Ervin and current Lobo senior RB Teriyon Gipson. After missing UNM’s game at Rut-gers on Sept. 17 with an injury, Gip-son returns to the lineup today.

The San Jose Mercury News reported Friday that SJSU starting quarterback Kenny Potter didn’t practice this week and isn’t expected to play. The UNM defense can’t count on that, of course. If Potter doesn’t play, the Lobos must hope redshirt freshman QB Josh Love — who threw four interceptions last week against Iowa State — doesn’t turn into the guy who threw 41 touchdown passes as a senior at Long Beach (Calif.) Poly

High School. In any case, says Lobo free safety Daniel Henry, the UNM defense had a lot of homework this week. “They do so many shifts, and they do so many different things where they motion people,” he said. The Spartans have an entirely new defensive staff, and Lobo offensive tackle Reno Hen-derson sees some changes. “They’re pretty stout up front, but they’re pretty basic,” he said. “They try to read. ... Free up their linebackers more.”

San Jose State coach Ron Caragher sees UNM’s starting linebackers — Dakota Cox, Kimmie Carson and Don-nie White — as the strength of the Lobos’ defense. “The middle linebacker (Cox) is a really good player,” Caragher said. “Their three linebackers do a nice job of getting pres-sures and creating mismatches on running backs from a pass protection standpoint. Those guys really stand out.” UNM starting quarterback Lamar

Jordan didn’t play in UNM’s 31-21 loss to the Spartans last year, but Caragher is well acquainted with Jordan from his hours in the film room. “Jor-dan’s got tremendous speed,” he said. “You see him on the triple option and the split-zone option, and he puts the ball away.” Lobos coach Bob Davie said this week he hopes to get senior wide receiver Dameon Gamblin more opportunities in the passing game.
