THE BOER WAR

In 1900, he volunteered to be a field surgeon in the

war between Great Britain and South African settlers.

His patriotic writings rallying support for the unpopular war led to a

knighthood.

A Lover of Sport

Conan Doyle indulged in cricket,

soccer, boxing, rugby, horseback

riding and bicycling.

AN AVID SKIER

The author, here with his first wife Louise in Norway, introduced his countrymen to the then little-known sport of skiing.

THE CREATOR OF SHERLOCK

HOLMES

He disliked being pigeonholed as a mystery writer and wanted to be known for his historical novels, which he thought were far better than the Holmes stories.

HIS GREAT LOVE

His first wife died after a long battle with tuberculosis.

He wed second wife Jean Leckie in 1907.

A SENSE OF HUMOR

Conan Doyle was full of warmth and humor, on display here as he dressed as a Viking for a costume party.

Conan Doyle became a devout believer in

the ability of mediums to contact the dead,

and a chief proponent of the movement.
