WHAT IS HANDBALL?

Handball is generally referred to as a

combination of basketball, soccer, and netball.

First introduced as an outdoor sport during the

1939 Summer Olympics, but has been an indoor

sport since the 1972 Summer Olympics.

Handball is played on a court the size of two

basketball courts.

At each end of the court is a net sized 9 feet

wide by 6.5 feet high.

There are typically 6 courts players and 1 goalie

per team.

POPULAR?

Handball is played throughout five continents by

over 180 countries and 19 million participants of all

ages.

Although handball is a minor sport in the United

States, it is most popularly played in Europe, with

Scandinavia, the Balkan countries, Russia,

Germany, France, and Spain holding the greatest

appreciation.

TYPES OF HANDBALL

Indoor Handball: Most commonly played.

Beach Handball: Known as the “new kid on the

block” was recognized in 1994.

Mini Handball: Is a less competitive version of

handball for kids in order to practice healthy

lifestyles, teamwork, make friends, and acquire

skills.

Street Handball: Is the newest addition of handball,

introduced in Denmark in 1997. This version is

played in both parks and streets, with minimal

requirements and equipment.

Formed in 2009 containing 20 clubs.

Includes two men’s divisions and one women’s division.

MEASUREMENT OF TALENT IN TEAM

HANDBALL

Testing for selection is one of the most important

fundamentals in any sport program.

Coaches assess motor, physical, and technical skills

on a regular basis and in the early stages of

development.

A study was taken from 405 players to undergo a

series of tests prior to their selection.

Tests included: Physical measurements, power tests,

speed tests, and a slalom dribbling test.

Comparisons between the players determined their

selection.
