After a busy couple ofweeks with the LimburgseTournament in Holland andthe Yellow Cup in Switzerlandlast weekend, there is no let-up in the gruelling schedule asHead Coach Dragan Djukicplans for the WorldChampionship qualifyingtournament in Finland laterthis month. Great Britain had applied toenter the Marranne eventearlier this year, and whenArgentina pulled out lastweek, the organisers askedfor GB to fill their spot. Group matches againstQatar and Tunisia await theGreat Britain team, and withthe possibility of a final matchagainst Algeria, Djukic is

relishing the chance of somemore match experience. “It’s great for us to beplaying in the MarranneTournament – it was aninvitation we could not turndown,” he said. “It is such a big tournament,and it’s great for us to bethere as a team, but also forpublicity, to let people knowthat Britain has a good hand-ball team. “It’s important that we’replaying African teams whoplay an open style of handballthat is different to theEuropean style which we aremore used to. “We have a young team andwe must be patient, but atthe same time it’s important

to give them experience ofplaying as wide and variedteams as we can.” After the MarranneTournament later this week,Djukic and his team will selectthe squad for the WorldChampionship qualifying

tournament in Finland fromJan 15-17, where Great Britainwill play Romania, BosniaHerzegovina and Finland.

The successfulcandidate will work inpartnership with theLondon Borough ofNewham, Leyton SCORECentre to develop andimplement an ambitionsdevelopment programmewhich particularly focuseson creating opportunitiesfor players of all ages. The scheme paysparticular attention tobuilding more capacity forhandball and forstrengthening the linksbetween schools and boththe further and highereducation sectors as wellas under-representedgroups. Developing leadershipand a volunteer workforcewill also be a key responsi-bility in sustaining handballin London and beyond forthe future.
