There is plenty of news this month, and there are more details of the Ring and Ride service, do use this and let the Parish Council know how it is going.
Have a good month; we will all be in our gardens at last of course! Anna Morley, Editor

HPc has been supporting Hagley residents who are experiencing flooding issues; one such issue is sewer flooding. A number of meetings have been held with the affected property owners and STW and as a result a ‘Hagley Sewer Flood alleviation scheme’ was approved for investigation by STW Programme Board. This means that starting February further investigations into sewer flooding across the whole area will begin. Existing surveys will be added to by extra flow, CCTV and manhole surveys. The investigation stage typically takes about 12 months; at that point a detailed proposal will go back to STW’s programme board to seek funding for remedial work. There is still much value in identifying any other households affected by sewer flooding and including them in the STW surveys. This is positive news and many thanks go to the STW team for taking such an active role in this working group. if you have a problem with sewer flooding at your Hagley property please contact me c/o HPC.
HPc approved a play scheme aimed at older youths in Hagley Playing field. More details will be available in due course. HPc also approved support to consider the rebuilding of the changing rooms in the playing field with support from West Hagley Fc, the Football Trust and Worcestershire Fa.
The Parish council are receiving an increase in complaints regarding dog fouling on pavements. Please can all dog owners ensure that they clean up any mess made by their dogs.

CLUB REPORTS
Historical & Field Society You may already be familiar with Dowles Brook which flows through the heart of the Wyre Forest and joins the River Severn close to the historic town of Bewdley. It is a popular destination for walkers and a haven for wildlife. However, following its quiet meanderings through leafy woods, it is now hard to image that for over 300 years it was the source of industrial output which brought employment and some prosperity to this rural setting. With Baveney Brook, it is only about nine miles long but at one time it powered more mills than the length of the River Severn from Bristol to Welshpool.
This was the topic of our speaker this month, Tim Booth who has dedicated much of his adult life to researching and conserving the remaining mills and their machinery. In his talk he took us on a photographic journey along the brooks showing the remaining legacy of blast furnaces and mills which in some cases still show the remains of their original water wheels.
Our meeting on Tuesday 3rd March at 8pm in St. Saviour’s Church Hall sees Julian Hunt presenting ‘Worcestershire Turnpikes’. Some of the Turnpikes in Worcestershire date back 300 years. The tolls levied along them paid for the maintenance of the main roads between the city and its surrounding towns. Prior to the Turnpikes the state of the roads made them impassable for much of the year and dangerous when passable. Visitors are most welcome at all our events – see hhfs.org.uk for details and contacts.

HAGLEY RotARY CLubOn 20th February 2015, the rotary club of Hagley held its now
traditional yearly fundraising comedy evening. The sell- out event attracted one hundred and fifty rotary supporters who packed Hagley community centre. The audience was entertained for three hours by comedian dougie Parker accompanied by musicians ashcroft and Lewis.
We enjoyed an extremely tasty traditional English fish and chips supper. President Martin Freckleton said: “i thoroughly enjoyed the evening; dougie is very talented. His down to earth humour cleverly pokes fun at real life situations.”
Many thanks to all our supporters who helped raise money for charity.if you would like to learn more about the rotary’s local, national and
international activities, please visit our website on www.1060.org.uk/hagley, or find us on Facebook and twitter.

CLUB REPORTS
The first meeting of 2015 was an “In-House” Cookery Demonstration when several members showed their cookery skills in both sweet and savoury dishes which everyone was then able to enjoy.
Hagley Evening WI joined us, as did several ladies who came as prospective members and who we hope enjoyed the afternoon enough to become actual members!
There are a number of extra events planned in the coming months two of which are particularly significant.
On 20th April there is to be a Fashion Show by Debut of Hagley, 7.30pm at Hagley Community Centre, tickets 5 pounds with a glass of wine. This is to raise funds for “Another Seat in the Sun” to commemorate Hagley Afternoon WI’s 95th Birthday in 2016.
For the 90th Birthday a seat was provided near the Community Centre. It has been so well used that members felt it needed a companion!
Tickets will shortly be available from Debut, the undersigned or members of Hagley Afternoon WI.
The other significant event is “A Day at Denman College” near Oxford on 27th July. This is the WI’s residential college where courses on a range of subjects for learning and enjoyment are provided.
The day will include coffee and light refreshments on arrival, a talk, tour, cookery demonstration, lunch and cream tea before departure.
So much to look forward to at Hagley Community Centre on the 2nd Monday in each month at 2pm. If you are intrigued please join us at any meeting or for more information contact the undersigned.

AFTERNOON W.I.
EVENING W.I.we started the year by having a combined meeting with
our friends in Hagley Afternoon wI and were treated to a most impressive cookery demonstration, it seemed like a dozen dishes made before our eyes and all available for sampling afterwards. Such generosity, thank you so much.
This month we are back in our normal routine, ie meeting, on wednesday 18th, at 7.30pm in The Free Church Hall, worcester Road, Hagley when we shall hear a talk entitled ‘The Lighter Side of Local Government’ by David Withey. It promises to be an interesting evening, perhaps we shall get some lowdown on how our local politicians cope with the many demands on their time and ability to meet all expectations that are put upon them.
Please do come and join us, you would be most welcome. For more information our contact numbers are Hagley 882829 or 882875.

Looking ahead to April, Ron Law will be our visiting artist to demonstrate the use of Ink and Wash.

Gardeners’ ClubWe welcomed the New Year in with our Annual Social, enjoying an excellent finger
buffet accompanied by wine and a smile. The professional husband and wife team entertained us with a selection of songs covering periods as far back as the 1930s to the 1980/90s, bringing many happy memories from musicals and solo artists.
After our AGM in February we now get down to the true purpose of a Gardeners ‘Club. Learning tips and ideas! Admiring beautiful gardens! Appreciating slides of wonderful flowers and getting together with like minded friends over a cup of coffee. A great evening out.
25th March – Gordon Forrest – ‘Wild Flower Meadows’ - always a welcome speaker to our meetings. His love of wildlife is well illustrated in his beautiful books and his fascinating Talks. If you have never heard Gordon, take this opportunity to meet an enthusiastic supporter of wild life in all its shapes and forms.
April 22nd we have invited Mick Poultney to give his Talk entitled ‘Raised Beds and No Dig Gardening’. Do not miss him. He is a one off with his very own way of delivery. Forget compost think eccentric. An evening you will remember.
We are now taking bookings for our outing to Pershore Open Gardens on Saturday June 6th, Pershore will have approximately 20 gardens open.
Visitors Welcome. Booking Tel: Judy Berrow 01562 777014 or Gerry Bird 01384 372839. Visitors welcome to any of our meetings. St Saviours Hall meetings start at 8.00pm..Happy Gardening!

Some dates for your diary! our Youth Section’s musical ‘into the Woods’ will be staged at the
community centre from Wednesday 14th to Saturday 17th October. Stephen Sondheim’s take on various fairy tales is currently receiving the attention of cinema audiences featuring Meryl Streep. Whilst we can’t match the multi million dollar budget you can’t beat live entertainment. The main characters are taken from ‘cinderella’, ‘Little red riding Hood’, ‘Jack and the Bean Stalk’ and ‘rapunzel’ and the show has plenty of witches, wolves and giants. More details including ticket information will follow in subsequent issues of the village news.
if you would like to take part in any aspect of theatre from acting, directing, front of house or backstage please phone 07907 457217 and leave a message. We will be very pleased to hear from you.

CLUB REPORTS
An internationally renowned folk singer, ballet screened live from the Royal Opera House and some thought-provoking theatre are amongst the highlights this March.
Ellie Taylor of ITV2’s Fake Reaction will take on some hard issues such as love, life and Matalan. Free-thinking philosopher Tom Stade stormed BBC1’s Live at the Apollo recently and is still basking in the glory of his sell-out show at Edinburgh Festival.
There’s plenty in store for folk music fans this month. Eleanor McEvoy is back for a welcome return visit and former Fairground Attraction star Eddi Reader will be demonstrating the depth and emotional power of her renowned solo material. Popular band The High Kings will also be making an appearance at Artrix.
Blue Orange Theatre will be presenting their production of Jane Eyre and the National Theatre Live’s season continues with Behind the Beautiful Forevers starring Meera Syal. The Royal Ballet’s production of Swan Lake, surely the most romantic of all ballets, is screened live from the Royal Opera House.
Purple Zeppelin are well-known for their stunning celebration of the music of Led Zeppelin and making a first appearance at Artrix are Duran to faithfully recreate the legendary music of pop legends Duran Duran.
Films at Artrix cinema in March include the hot Oscar favourite The Theory of Everything and a special screening of Bicycle, a tribute to the nation’s favourite form of transport by a BAFTA-winning director.

CLUB REPORTS
TREFOIL GUILDThe Hagley meeting was a great success. Chris remembered our
promise of cucumber sandwiches and several games of Scrabble were played.
There will be a change of programme for the March meeting. Pat is going to teach us how to crochet, so we will meet at 35 Summervale Road at 2.00pm.
Elizabeth Gingell
Girlguiding Walton District
1st Hagley rainbow Unit invites all past rainbows to join them on the 19th March at 4.30 pm at the Free church for Jayne Mottershead’s farewell party.
For personal reasons Jayne has decided to ‘retire’ from Guiding in Hagley and she will be very much missed by all, not only for her commitment and dedication to her Unit but also for planning and leading our ‘special occasion’ church services and celebrations over many years.
Jayne began her Leadership career in Lancashire as a Brownie Guider in 1977, having as a Guide achieved her Queen’s Guide award and gold duke of edinburgh award. By the time she moved to Hagley, she had also been a county trainer in cheshire and ran courses at the Guide centre in Waddow, Lancashire.
Jayne has been involved in Guiding for nearly 35 years and the majority of that time has been spent here in Walton district. She has been a Brownie Leader, Guide Leader and our district commissioner but most importantly she started our first rainbow Unit 23 years ago. in recognition of her contribution to local Guiding, Jayne received the ‘county Thanks’ award.
1st Hagley rainbows Unit will continue under new leadership; however, Walton district Girl Guiding will greatly miss Jayne’s wealth of experience and expertise and thanks Jayne for the time she has given to Girl Guiding over so many years.
Gill Quinlivan (district Guider)

Hagley Catholic High SchoolThe second half of the Spring Term has got off to a wonderful start.Recent Events
The highlight of February was undoubtedly the Pyramid Concert at Birmingham Town Hall. This large-scale event was the result of a long-term project between Hagley Catholic High School and the primary schools we work with. For several months Fred Mallinson, Subject Leader of Music at Hagley, has visited the various primary schools teaching them how to play a collection of Elton John songs using a variety of instruments. The young children worked incredibly hard to put on an uplifting performance; it was wonderful to see such incredible talent being nurtured from such a young age. Well done to all of the teachers from across all of the schools!
A highlight on our social calendar was our Lourdes Quiz Evening. A professional Quiz Master came to host an evening of brain-teasing fun, giggles and refreshments. All of this was to raise funds for our Sixth Formers’ upcoming pilgrimage to Lourdes in May.
Just before the holiday, Challenge Team UK came to deliver important messages about Sex & Relationships to our pupils. Using a mixture or entertaining sketches and hard-hitting messages, the presentation was well-received by all the pupils.Upcoming Events
On 20 March, at 7pm, you are invited to attend our annual Musical. This year’s musical features a number of songs taken from a variety of shows. Tickets are available from Sarah Aston on 01562 883193.
Hagley Tuesday Groupformerly Hagley Wives and Women’s Fellowship
The first of our meetings will be on March 10th, when Fiona Lucas will join us to give a talk entitled “Tea Towels from Around the World”. She will regale us with stories inspired by these everyday objects.
We will welcome Lt Col Gerald Lesinski on March 24th he is coming to give a talk about the “Lord Leycester Hospital” in Warwick. It was never a hospital but a retirement home for ex–service men , no doubt you might have passed this wonderful building in Warwick and wondered what lay within, now is your chance to find out. It is a timbered building dating back mainly from the late 14th Century clustered round the Norman gateway into the town with its 12th Century Chantry Chapel above it.
Do check out our new website which has full details of our activities.Toni Allison

Students have this week been celebrated on the United Nations’ World Food Programme website for exceeding the one million mark with their ‘Free Rice’ online quiz which generates food donations for the starving around the world; the rice is distributed by the world Food Programme to guarantee basic rations for people in areas of acute need, like Syria, West Africa and Iraq. The game is sponsored by global companies.
Since October our students have clocked up a phenomenal one hundred and ten thousand correct answers in the quizzes, which equates to a 1.1 million grains of rice! Form Tutor Mr Cangiano says, “My tutor group are loving this! Some are even coming in early to get some done. They started the ‘1000 club’ where members can only join after getting 1000 grains during tutorials, but that’s now jumped up to the ‘3000 club’! Getting updates on how the other Houses in school are doing really spurs them on. It’s a great cause and a great activity”.
For several years we have taken part in Global Citizenship Study Visits to UN headquarters in Geneva and in August 2014 met Paulette Jones, spokesperson for the World Food Programme. Ms Jones has sent a personal video message to the school: “Thanks to you more and more children and adults are receiving free rice. wFP believes strongly in its mandate to end world hunger and at wFP we encourage you to keep playing the Free Rice Game to support our long term goal.”
