Why a game board metaphor?
• Implies a shared experience.• Requires strategic thinking.• Establishes rapport & skill.• It can truly be FUN!• You might be the WINNER!
• Serious competition…? Games cause you to care about the outcome.
• Successful finish…? You want to win as an individual or as a team.
• Scorecard value…? The “grade” matters less than learning how to play the game!
WARNING! It can be addictive!
How does this work with ePortfolios?
• In teaching…Significant learning activities assistthe student to curate evidence oftheir learning. Providing reflectivewriting prompts (encouraging thepractice of reflection) usually resultsin lasting and more meaningful value.
• In learning…students benefit from Knowing what they have learned; Discovering what they want to do; and, Identifying what they must first learn to complete the task. It leads to more active engagement in the process!

A final word about detours…
• EMBRACE THEM!This is often where the learning happens.
• Some destinations are detours in disguise…such as a new idea or discovery.
• Some detours become destinations…seemingly wasted time can seem like a loss until you look back and observe what really happened!
