A Grace-Filled Invitation to Exploration A New Sermon Series and “Sack Lunch” Discussion
The highlight of my last few months was being in relationship with our
confirmation students, exploring questions of faith and coming to under-
stand more fully what it means to live as disciples of Jesus Christ within
a grace-based tradition! They brought to the table great enthusiasm,
keen insights and thought-provoking questions. Conversations that be-
gan in confirmation often continued into the week, not just with the stu-
dents, but with their mentors too! It was a rich time of learning about
diverse expressions of faith and discovering what is blessed and unique
about our branch of Christian faith. In response to requests to offer a
teaching opportunity for adults, and explore some of these areas in wor-
ship, I want to invite you to share in a new opportunity starting July 13.
For eight weeks we will explore Wesleyan-based discipleship through a
sermon series I’m calling “The Wesleyan Way.” They will be connected
sermon offerings that will also stand alone (in case your vacation plans
take you away a Sunday or two).
I’ve based this series
on a book by Bishop
Scott Jones called “The Wesleyan Way: Faith That Matters.”
It has been described as an “exciting and inspiring new study,
(in which) Scott J. Jones helps seekers and believers to envi-
sion and practice discipleship as a way of life. Presenting
Christianity from a Wesleyan perspective, Jones invites partici-
pants into a deeper, more thoughtful, more active commitment
to Christ. “ I think you will really enjoy it!
As part of this offering, I want to invite you to join me on
Tuesdays from 12:00–1:00 pm in room 113. We will use a
short video segment (8-10 min) from the series and a study
guide to continue the conversation that started with the sermon
two days earlier. Bring a snack or sack lunch if you’d like and
use the lunch hour to nourish your heart and mind as we ex-
plore even deeper the work of God in our lives. If you’d like a
copy of the Jones’ work, we will have them available to you in
the church office after the 4th at a discounted price of $11.
They will also be available at the first “Sack Lunch” Discus-
sion Group. I look forward to sharing with you what I hope
will be blessed and sacred time of learning together.
Peace and grace, Pastor Lara

MUSIC NOTES
I am thrilled to be joining SUMC as your Director of Music and Fine Arts as Sean and Mary transition to their new home in Arlington. He has built a wonderful program of so many people from every age and stage, and my hope is to continue to build upon that as I partner with you in the "work of the people" that is worship. I often tell my UMHB students that being a new director is like cooking Christmas dinner for someone else's family. Everyone but you knows what to expect and whether the mashed potatoes should be lumpy or creamy. My hope is that we enjoy our weekly "meals" to-gether and collect many incredible memories of gathering to sing the Lord's praises in every season of our lives as His Church.
Salado Food Pantry- Thank you for your terrific support and donations! We are in need of canned corn and green beans, spaghetti sauce, canned meat, canned fruit and soups. The work day is the 3rd Wednesday of every month from 1:00-3:00 pm at First Baptist Church. If you are interested in helping with the distribution of food on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays, contact Pat Scarborough at 512-635-4924.
Last Chance!! Camera Donations Needed for Kenya AIDS Orphans. During the July Kenya mission trip, Jennifer Wynne is going to be teaching AIDS orphans and street children basic photography, then have them capture images of their lives to be used in a non-profit book. We need donations of digital cameras you no longer use. The cameras need to work. Chargers and memory cards are a plus!! Mark your checks Kenya Mission Photos. If you have questions, please contact Jennifer at 254-630-2017 or Andrea at 947-5482.
