Aim: By the end of this session all student will

describe the different stages of group development.

Objectives: Describe the processes that you go through to create

your own team. Explain how each of these phases effect sports teams.

TASK

In groups of five you are to design a game that can be used as a recap for the previous session.

This can be a team quiz, individual questions or anything else you can think of.

You have 10minutes to complete this task.

STAGES OF GROUP DEVELOPMENT For a group of people to become a team, they must go through four development stages. (Tuckman, 1965)

What do you think these could be?

Forming Storming Norming Performing

FORMING

During this stage, group members familiarise themselves with other members of the group. They must get to know each other and try decide if

they belong in that group.

Assess the strength and weaknesses other members. Start to test relationships with other in the group.

Individual will get to know their role within the group

STORMING

What do you think begins to happen at this stage?

Conflict begins to develop between individuals in the group.

Individuals will start to form cliques This will start to

question the position and authority of the leader.

These develop because of the demands placed on the on the group members. Some individuals will

start to try and get a more important role within the group.

NORMING

The instability, hostility and conflict from the previous stage is replaced by cooperation and solidarity. All members of the group start to work towards the

common goal. At this time group cohesion develops, group

satisfaction increases.

The leader of the group will expect group members to become more involved in the decision making process.

PERFORMING

The performing stage involves the team progressing and functioning effectively as a unit. The group works without conflict and want to achieve

the goals. There is little need for external supervision as the

group is more motivated.
