Freud believe that our personality is made up of the id, ego and super ego (we will discuss this later)

Because of this theory he believe that most of “who we are” is formed at a young age

Much of his psychosexual theory has been discounted…but it is kind of interesting

We have accepted many of his terms in our venacular

Intro to Freud…..

Oral stage Birth -18 mo. An infant finds

pleasure through the mouth◦ Ex. Nursing◦ If an infant wants to

explore something it immediately goes to the mouth.

◦ Have you heard of an “oral fixation?”

Anal Stage18 mo.-3 years Toddler finds pleasure

in controlling his or her bowels.

There are few things a toddler can produce…..

My nephews loved to say..”Aunt Nicole, do you want to see……

Have you ever been called anal?

Phallic Stage3-6 Can you guess where

they find pleasure? This is the stage of the

Oedipus complex and/or the Electra complex

Final two stages not as important to Freud

Latency 6-12 Genital 12 on up

Children explore and realize the difference between sexes

People begin to repress events in each of the stages and personalities form
