Completed in 1997, this project is a model of sustainable design and construction, maximizing resource efficiency and minimizing environmental impact. Important design considerations were the choice of building materials (recycled and recyclable concrete and steel), and the desire to fit this large structure unobtrusively and sensitively within the island community.

In a celebration of recycling, a laser cut steel filigree of local flora and fauna by an artist surrounds the large portholes into the public recycling bins. The installation's funding is from King County's one-percent-for-arts program which dedicates a portion of municipal construction budgets to architecturally integrated public art. Porcelain enamel on steel panels, by the same artist, brightens the Scale House. The art adds another layer to the County's transformation of an overlooked utilitarian building type that forms a backdrop for Vashon Island's community life.

“Our approach to sustainable design is rooted in the essential nature of the site itself, the orientation of buildings to topography/sun, minimizing construction waste, and making appropriate choices for building systems and the material palette. We integrate innovative methods of dealing with passive cooling, natural ventilation, managing daylight, energy use, recycled and repurposed materials, life cycle cost analyses and green roof technology. Currently 65% of our architectural staff is LEED Accredited. Our in-house sustainability advancement group oversees in-house research initiatives, promotes staff literacy in sustainability through programs and conferences, and promotes LEED education and accreditation.”

EARTHHOUSE

Designed in 1968, this house represents the primal connection between man and nature, allowing its occupants to be inside and outside at the same time. The owner, former Ambassador to Iceland, desired a house that recalled the sod-roof houses around Reykjavik.

The pool and house are on axis with Mount Rainier, paying homage to a treasured natural monument. The building is cut into the hillside so that the planted roof plane seamlessly joins the building to the surrounding landscape, making the entire dwelling seem like an excavated sanctuary in the natural environment.
