The Renovation of the

London officePart 1: Insulation (Summer 2008)

A story of mud, sweat and sears

The office building

Existing Exterior Walls:400mm Brickwork

U-value of 1.4

Wood fiberboard Insulation with Clay plastering

Wood fiberboard Insulation is:

> Made of waste wood> Renewable Resource> Bio-degradable> Good conductivity & insulation> Adds some thermal mass> Breathable

Clay plastering:> Made of earth / clay> Natural & Renewable Resource> Bio-degradable> Low embodied energy> Breathable> Doesn’t trap moisture> Eliminates the need for paint

reduces time & cost & toxicity

Insulation Effect:

400mm Brickwork (existing)100mm Wood fiberboard7 mm Clay Plaster; 2 layers

U-value drops from 1.4 to 0.325

The old insulation was removed

The radiators were cut and drained

The walls were completely bare

1 ton of insulation boards arrived

…and 1 and ½ tons of clay

They were brought in…

…and packed the whole room

The boards were cut to size…

…with a jigsaw blade

The 100mm boards were drilled in…

…with a 200mm long drill bit

The boards were nailed to the wall…

…with plastic plugs…

…in the corners and the centre

The walls were less bare

The clay was placed in the buckets

…water was poured…

…to mix the clay plaster

The wet lining began…

…to cover the entire room

Mesh was cut to size…

…to hold the clay plaster…

…and was covered with white plaster

The heating & electrics were reconnected

The window sills were put back

The office was ready!

and now occupied.

The Renovation of the

London officePart 2: Biomass Stove (Nov 2010)

The thermal store arrived…

…was craned into position…

…and lowered into the basement

…and installed into its final position

The flue was installed…

…from the basement to the roof.

The stove arrived…

…was craned into position…

…and installed in its final location.

The existing beam was 60 years old & could not handle 1 ton of pellets

So it was removed…

…and replaced with a new one.

1 ton of pellets arrives every month in winter for 6 months

The pallet is lifted from the pavement…

…to the basement.

The final result!
