• Pilot project: I-670 eastbound from just east of I-71 to I-270• Open during periods of congestion, with expected use during the PM weekday commute• Installs 33 cameras to monitor traffic conditions 24/7 • Installs nine overhead signs to manage incidents and inform drivers when the SmartLane is open• Utilizes variable speed limits - 45 mph when SmartLane is open- to keep traffic at a constant speed, reducing the slow/go effect• Reconfigures I-270/670 interchange (where SmartLane ends) to eliminate weaving and improve safety
It’s a shoulder that’s available as an extra lane during peak travel times and congestion. It uses technology to control access and speed limit, and communicate with drivers.
