Exploded geyser

Directions??

Poor plumbing.

Bent rafters

Change a non pressure to high pressure then this happens.

Roof leak due to wrong instalation.

Backyard design, that is why we need standards

SA National Standard for Domestic Solar Water Heaters

• The Primary Standard applicable in South Africa for solar water heaters is

• SANS 1307 :2009 Domestic solar water heaters

• The following SA National Standards are referenced within SANS 1307 and hence compliance to requirements is required:

• SANS 151:2008 Fixed electric storage water heaters

• SANS 60335-2-21:2000 Safety of household and similar electrical appliances Part 2: Particular requirements for storage water heaters

Outdoor Exposure Test Site, SABS Pretoria

SANS 1307:2009 - Requirements Mechanical Tests – SANS 6210

• 5.2 Stagnation test for collector• Low failure rate only on flat plate (not vacuum tubes)

• Condensation

• Good insulation required and correct installation

• 5.3 Mechanical strength• Fatigue test (250 000 cycles) and hydrostatic pressure test

• Vacuum test – most pass

• Low pressure, many failures

• High pressure, most pass

• Quality of welds is critical

• 5.4 Rain penetration of collectors• 5 min per 30min for a period of 3 hours

Torque test. 115 Nm.

Rain test.

SANS 1307:2009 – RequirementsMechanical Tests – SANS 6210

• 5.5 Resistance of collectors to Hail damage

• 12 perpendicular impacts from the ice gun, each of impact energy of 11J ±1 J

• Changed in revised 2009 standard

• Vacuum tubes, previously failing; now better quality and most passing test

• Flat plates OK

• 5.6 Resistance to Freezing

• Cold room at -20 oC

• Food grade glycol suitable

• Circulation pump with battery backup

• Insulation important

• Other Tests: 5.7 DZR, 5.8 Water absorption, 5.9 Corrosion resistance

Hail test, 11 + - 1 j

Measure the speed of the hail ball. 11.11 J

Freeze room.

Freeze test -20 ºC

Freeze failure

Fatigue test, required: 250 000 cycles

Fatigue failure, 17000 cycles, required: 250 000

SANS 1307:2009 - RequirementsThermal Properties – SANS 6211-1

• Advanced (Outdoor) Thermal Performance Exposure test

• Gives Q factor (measure of energy saving) for complete solar system

• Minimum of 6 days exposure

• 10 – 25 MJ/m, range used to give average performance

• Regression analysis to give Q Factor for whole year
