Biographies

Susan Savage was appointed Oklahoma’s secretary of state by Gov. Brad Henry on Jan. 13, 2003. Prior to her appointment, Savage was a faculty member at the

University of Oklahoma College of Architecture, where she lectured about public policy and finance related to planning, urban design, landscape architecture and community development. Savage was elected mayor of Tulsa in 1992 and re-elected for two four-year terms in 1994 and 1998, making her the most tenured and the first woman mayor in Tulsa’s history.

Marlene I. Strathe joined Oklahoma State University as provost and senior vice president on July 2003, and served as interim system CEO and president from

March 2007 to March 2008. As provost, her responsibilities include oversight of nine colleges as well as scholar development, academic services to students, assessment, international education and honors. She has researched and published in a variety of areas, including teacher education, assessment and evaluation, higher education administration, and international education.

Jean Hendrickson is the executive director for Oklahoma A+ Schools®. She is responsible for overseeing the development of the network across the state, as well

as for participating in the larger, national network and international partnerships. Prior to serving in this position, she was principal at Mark Twain Elementary in Oklahoma City, where she first learned of the A+ philosophy. She led her staff through the application process to be accepted as one of the 15 initial Oklahoma A+ Schools. Her work has been documented in news reports, articles and books, including Elaine K. McEwan’s, 10 Traits of Highly Effective Principals.

Debbie Blanke has served the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education in academic affairs for more than eight years and is the chair of the Governor’s

International Team, the state coordinator of the Oklahoma Women in Higher Education state network (in association with the American Council on Education’s Office of Women in Higher Education) and the state coordinator for the Academic Common Market. She has accumulated more than 20 years of working and teaching experiences in Oklahoma higher education institutions, including a research university, regional universities and a community college.

Teacher of the Year

Brian Grimm Before joining Will Rogers High School in Tulsa, Okla., in 2004, Brian Grimm taught at several Texas school districts, including Dallas, La Porte, Clear Creek and Anahauc. He was chosen Clear Lake High School Teacher of the Year in 1999 and has been the Will Rogers Teacher of the Year since 2007.

In his written portfolio for the Oklahoma Teacher of the Year competition, he wrote that his greatest contribution was his message.

“Teachers need to know they can do it [because] it is not an easy task to pull kids away from failure,” Grimm wrote. “Apathy is easy but change is a challenge. Students must know that they are not a product of their environment, but rather through education and empowerment, their environment becomes a product of their resolve to change. Students must know that their beliefs drive their actions and their actions drive their community.”

A state committee comprised of education, business and civic leaders chooses the Oklahoma Teacher of the Year in a formal selection process that includes individual and group interviews, a portfolio and video.

Each fall, Rose State College highlights a country for its Global Oklahoma celebration. This event has been held on the RSC campus for more than 20 years and includes cultural performances, food and booths.

A task force to explore best practices in international student recruitment has been established at Tulsa Community College.

“Todos Juntos” (All Together) is a recurring festival at TCC celebrating various facets of Hispanic culture.

Some of the campuses with which Oklahoma State University maintains robust, collaborative relationships include: Coimbatore Institute of Technology (India), Hawassa University (Ethiopia), King Mongkuts University of Technology (Thailand), University of Technology (Jamaica) and the University of Gardez (Afghanistan).

The School of International Studies at OSU hosts the Global Briefing Series to educate and inform the public about events, both in the United States and abroad. Developed after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Global Briefing Series welcomes visiting scholars, experts and world leaders to deliver briefings that provide a global perspective on current events.

OSU has established a goal that 25 percent of the 2012 graduating class will have a significant international experience.

Four hundred and seventy international students representing 58 countries enrolled at Oklahoma City Community College last year.

OCCC’s Institute for Global Excellence includes the Center for International Business (CIB) as well as the Center for World Languages and Cultures. The CIB offers a Certificate of Mastery in International Business and online courses taught by Fulbright Scholars.

Seventy-five percent of study–abroad students at Cameron University are female, and some students have been in their 70s when they embarked on their first study–abroad tours.

Each year, CU actively recruits students from the eastern Caribbean region, often using current international students as recruiters.

The University of Oklahoma is one of 80 Confucius Institute members in nearly 40 nations. The institute promotes the development of Chinese language education as well as cultural and business exchanges with the People’s Republic of China.

OU has seen record growth in students studying abroad, particularly on short-term or summer options. Last year more, than 650 had a credit-bearing experience overseas. The international student population at OU has reached almost 2,000. The School of International and Area Studies has 450 enrolled majors in which study abroad is a degree requirement.

K-12 & Campus Highlights

As reflected in its mission statement, The University of Tulsa educates “men and women of diverse backgrounds and cultures” to “welcome the responsibility of citizenship and service in a changing world.” Currently, 15 percent of TU undergraduates complete a significant international experience, including studying and interning abroad. Thirteen percent of the total student body are international students.

This year TU launched a dual degree program with the Petroleum University of China-Beijing in which students studying petroleum engineering, geosciences, chemical engineering and business. Students complete their first two years of an undergraduate degree in China and the second two years at TU, earning degrees from both institutions.

Each May, students at East Central University can participate in a three-week tour of Russia and the Ukraine.

Northeastern State University is initiating an International Faculty Development Program that will facilitate faculty travel-study opportunities worldwide.

NSU was elected an institutional consortium member for the Council for International Education Exchange (CIEE), one of the nation’s largest and oldest study–abroad organizations.

At the University of Central Oklahoma’s Centre for Global Competency, study–abroad students receive training on applying for visas, adapting to new cultures, transferring coursework and financial aid.

Dr. Wei Chen of UCO was recently honored by the Carnegie Foundation as the U.S. 2008 Professor of the Year at master’s-level universities. His close work with South China Normal University in Guangzhou, China, in the area of biomedical engineering is currently contributing to valuable research on a new cancer treatment for melanoma.

At Oklahoma Panhandle State University, student exchange programs are taking place with the Universidad Nacional de Villa Maria in Argentina.

Oklahoma City University welcomed visiting scholars last academic year from China (international economics and law) as well as India and Korea (theology).

OCU study–abroad students had numerous distinctions last year, including a national scholarship to study Russian dance and the Taipei City Government Language Grant Program.

Recently at Redlands Community College, more than 75 adults and college and high school students from central Oklahoma toured nine days in the Tuscany region of Italy, with additional stops in Florence and Rome. At a cemetery for World War II American

soldiers killed in battle, one of the adult RCC participants was able to lay a bouquet of flowers at the grave of her brother for the first time.

Murray State College recently formed its faculty-based Global Education Committee, which encourages student-faculty presentations as well as research collaborations in Mexico.

Northern Oklahoma College maintains an active memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Consortium of Humanitarian Service and Education and is developing another MOU with the Institute for Shipboard Education.

Students at Rogers State University take credit-bearing coursework in bioethics at Hannam University, South Korea.

Oklahoma State University’s Institute of Technology in Okmulgee recently sent students to Finland, Thailand and Brazil for culinary, agricultural technology and other coursework.

The Oklahoma Global Education Consortium was founded by Oklahoma’s community colleges to “foster collaboration between institutions to achieve the goal of preparing individuals and communities to participate in the global society and economy.” For more than a decade, OGEC has hosted an annual conference to promote collaboration among two-year institutions.

The Oklahoma State Department of Education has enjoyed a robust relationship with France through the Franco-American Fellows Grant and its partnership with the Acadèmie d’Amiens.

Eisenhower International Elementary and Zarrow International Elementary schools are part of the Tulsa school system and offer language

immersion in either French or Spanish. Almost all classes are taught in a foreign language until the second grade, when English reading and language arts are first introduced. Some fifth graders participate in exchange programs in Mexico and France.

Oklahoma State University The International Legacy Continues

Since 1951, OSU has participated in programs in more than 100 countries, including Ethiopia, Pakistan, Brazil, Guatemala, Egypt, Thailand, Venezuela, Morocco, Jordan, Japan, Mexico and China.

From 1952 to present, hundreds of OSU faculty and staff have assisted educational opportunities in Ethiopia.

OSU’s internationally recognized faculty and programs attract more than 1,600 international students to OSU each year.

OSU has more than 180 active memorandums of understanding with more than 150 entities in nearly 60 countries.
