Morning on the Sea of Galilee
Jesus Feeds the Disciples
John 21:6: He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.
John 21:7-8: Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.
Jesus Feeds the Disciples
John 21:10-11: Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn.

The Reinstatement of Peter
The Reinstatement of Peter
Celebrating the Lord’s supper – the issue to understand is the sacrifice Jesus is going to make on their behalf
Fighting about greatness, but Jesus points out that He is demonstrating greatness – it is rooted in serving.
Jesus issues the New Commandment to love one another – that is how they will be identified with Jesus.
The Lord warns Peter Satan is looking to sift him like wheat, but Jesus prays for Him
What Got Peter in Trouble?
Psalm 10:4: In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.
Proverbs 11:2a: When pride comes, then comes disgrace
Proverbs 13:10a: Where there is strife, there is pride
Proverbs 14:3a: A fool’s mouth lashes out with pride
Proverbs 16:18: Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
What is Love?
Storge – like the affection one feels for a puppy
Eros – this is a sensual kind of love
Phileo – it basically means friendship – a brotherly love
Agapao – (aka “agape”) giving for the sake of giving; never expecting anything in return.
Interrogation #1
Jesus’ 1st Question:
John 21:15a:“Simon son of John, do you [agape] love me more than these?”
Peter’s 1st Response:
John 21:15b: “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I [phileo] love you.”
Jesus’ 1st Commission:
John 21:15c: “Feed my lambs”
Interrogation #2
Jesus’ 2nd Question:
John 21:16a: Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you [agape] love me?”
Peter’s 2nd Response:
John 21:16b: “He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I [phileo] love you.”
Jesus’ 2nd Commission:
John 21:16c: “Take care of my sheep”
Interrogation #3
Jesus’ 3rd Question:
John 21:17a: The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you [phileo] love me?”
Peter’s 3rd Response:
John 21:17b: Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I [phileo]love you.”
Jesus’ 3rd Commission:
John 21:17c: “Feed my sheep”
What Kind of Love Do You Love Me?
John 21:18-19: Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”
What About Him?John 21:20-21: Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”
John 21:22-23: Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” Because of this, the rumor spread among the believers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?”

If Jesus Wasn’t God
Prophecy wouldn’t be fulfilled• Isaiah 53:5: But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
We wouldn’t see a human example of God the Father’s character•John 14:9b: “He who has seen me has seen the Father.”•John 10:30: “I and my Father are one”
If Jesus Wasn’t GodThere would be no resurrection – we would still be in our sins and not forgiven•Romans 6:4: “Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”•2 Corinthians 5:21:“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
If Jesus Wasn’t GodWe would not have the Holy Spirit living in us•Romans 8:11: “But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.”•2 Corinthians 1:22: “who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.”
God would be a liar.•Titus 1:2: God cannot lie
Chapter 21 Summary
We are a lot like the disciples – we love being with Jesus and are amazed at His power, wisdom, mercy and love.
Despite our love and devotion to Jesus, we are going to fail from time to time – typically when we don’t obey what He asks us to do.
Jesus is not a God of judgment and condemnation – He is a God of forgiveness and restoration
He invites us to join Him, and He wants to feed and serve us
For all of these things, He simply wants us to follow Him
