Idea & Concepts

• The Google Self-Driving Car is a project by Google that involves developing technology for autonomous cars.

• The software powering Google’s cars is called Google Chauffeur.

• The project is currently being led by Google engineer Sebastian Thrun, former director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and co-inventor of Google Street View.

Some facts that you should know

• The U.S. state of Nevada passed a law on June 29, 2011, permitting the operation of autonomous cars in Nevada.

• Google had been lobbying for robotic car laws.

• The Nevada law went into effect on March 1, 2012

• The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles issued the first license for an autonomous car in May 2012

• The license was issued to a Toyota Prius modified with Google’s experimental driverless technology.

Some facts that you should know (cont’d)

• In April 2012, Florida became the second state to allow the testing of autonomous cars on public roads.

• California become the third state to legalize the use of self-driven cars for testing purposes as of September 2012 when Governor Jerry Brown signed the bill into law at Google HQ in Mountain View.

• Governor Rick Snyder signed legislation allowing the testing of automated of Self-driving vehicles on Michigan’s roads in December 2013, BUT this legislation requires a human in the driver seat at all times while the vehicles is in use

• In Europe, Germany, Netherlands and Spain have allowed testing robotic cars in traffic.

• Also, Finland is planning on passing a law before 2015.

FEATURES & FUNCTIONSBasically how it works.

Advantages

Driverless Car drive at

Optimal Speed

1. Reduction of Car Accidents

• Automated collision avoidance systems

• Drive at optimal speed

• Less fatalities

• Avoid human errors

• No sleepy, grumpy, texting humans

• Increased reliability and faster reaction time compared to human drivers

… due to an autonomous system’s

2. Fuel-efficient

Due to

optimal speed

3. Convenient

• Sit in the car, let the car drive you to the destination

• Fully utilize the advancement of technologies

4. Better traffic flow

There would be a better management of traffic flow as they will all be monitored over a controlled system

5. No driving test or driving license

6. Best for Senior Citizens & handicaps

• No more age constraints

• It would not matter if the occupants were under age, over age, blind, distracted, intoxicated, or otherwise impaired

• Safer for them due to optimal speed

A questionable Advantage – FEWER CAR?

If each family owned one car that suits all family members, then it will be fewer cars on the road.

So this “advantage” will depend on the regulation by the Government, maybe by restrict the number of cars can be owned by each family.

BUTIF each member wish to have one as they can own it without a driving license and to their convenience, then this particular advantage will become a SERIOUS DISADVANTAGE
