The First Sunday of Lent
Be an "ArK Angel" for the Good Shepherd
"See, I am now establishing my covenant with you
and your descendants after you and with every living creature"
Genesis 9:8
There are many great stories in salvation history. This weekend we hear one of the most memorable. Noah and the
flood have captured the attention of generation after generation of faith-filled people. And there is no more glorious sign of
God's work in creation, and our lives, than the rainbow God provides to establish a covenant of divine love. Noah's covenant
with God is pretty great too - a person who hopes against hope to give up everything, build an ark and protect the human
race and animal kingdom from decimation. Noah didn't have a rainbow to throw across the sky to
show for it, but people are still looking for the ark to this day (just Google it.)
Like Noah in the days of old, each and every one of us can take part in building the ark by almsgiving.
In the giving of alms, we take part by giving of ourselves to the cause of Noah,
and of course, Jesus who asks us in the very famous Matthew 25:
“Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I
was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed
me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.”
In the giving of alms, we take part as well by sacrificial giving. We are to give our time, talent and treasure in a way that
recognizes the suffering of others, and of course, the suffering of Jesus who has died for our sins and our salvation.
It is through suffering and sacrifice that Jesus restores our joy and hope in the world and eternal life.
In being an almsgiver this Lent, you can build an ark. You can take part in God's story of salvation.
You can become an "Ark Angel." Below you can see our ark that is displayed in Daniels Hall.
Each plank contains the names of those who have made a covenant to be an almsgiver of some sort this Lent.
They are "Ark Angels." So stop by the ark once you have committed to a way of giving of yourself or sacrificial giving.
Write your name on a plank. And the people of Good Shepherd will build an ark as a covenant with God.
Join the "Ark Angels" of Good Shepherd this Lent.

Immigration Corner
(Good Shepherd Immigration Study Group)
“Seek Contact With The
Marginalized” (Pope Francis)
Addressing directly the 20 newly
appointed cardinals from 18 different
countries, Pope Francis told them in his
homily that the curing of the leper is the
“logic, the mind of Jesus, and this is the
way of the Church. Not only to welcome
and reintegrate with evangelical courage
all those knock at our door, but to go out
and to seek, fearlessly and without
prejudice, those who are distant,
freely sharing what we ourselves
freely received.”
Contact Rep. Sensenbrenner and Johnson
(1-800-828-0498) and ask them not to
attach anti-immigration legislation to the
Homeland Security Appropriations Bill.
Our sisters and brothers deserve
humane, comprehensive and just
immigration reform legislation.
Cards to the Homebound Or Lonely of Heart
Did you know that we have a card ministry here at Good Shepherd?
Beautiful, seasonal themed homemade cards are sent out monthly to those
who need to be touched by the love and support of the Good Shepherd family.
Do you know of anyone? Someone who can no longer join us for Mass.
Someone who is traveling a rough journey at the moment – either physically
or spiritually. Someone who just needs a gentle reminder that they are not alone.
Short term or long; we want them to know that we, the Good Shepherd family,
are holding them in prayerful support.

“A modern day reflection
on the Parable of the Prodigal Son”
by Richard Rohr, OFM
In this new teaching, Richard starts with reading the final part of the
Scripture parable of the “Prodigal Son” as he focuses on the elder son.
This reading gives insight into a deep reflection on something
that we all have with us, the “Loyal Soldier”.
In this teaching, Richard weaves a unifying narrative between Scripture,
spiritual direction and mature spirituality. Come and hear how the Loyal Soldier
is very helpful in our early years, but upon reaching adulthood, the time
comes to give the Loyal Soldier an “honorable discharge”.
Come, experience Richard’s reflections & share your own.

Question to Ponder - First Sunday of Lent
Children: What good habit could you work on during Lent to become closer to God?
Adults: How could you step away from your daily responsibilities to renew yourself?
St. Ben's meal program is in need of people to help provide the food.
The need is as big as ever and some months we don't have enough food to feed all of
those in need. You don't have to be a gourmet cook or even have lots of time. You will
provide meatloaf one month, fruit the next, dessert the next and then have a month
off. You make the food in your own kitchen or buy it already made from the store,
and drop it off in the Good Shepherd kitchen on the 3rd Tues. or Wed. of each month.
Contact Corinna in the CF office if you would like to be a part of this team.
A Note From Sleeping Bags and More
Dear Good Shepherd Friends,
The Sleeping Bags and More group thanks you for your donations over the past year.
All the sleeping bags, hats and mittens made last year have been donated to St. Ben’s,
House of Peace, St. Michael’s Parish, and MacCanon Brown Homeless Sanctuary.
In this cold winter season, we need flat queen and King size sheets, blankets,
mattress pads, comforters, and such for the “insides” and old draperies
or any large pieces of sturdy fabric fort he “outers.” Leave donations in the south
entrance closet. For more information, contact Eileen Gibbs @ 414-354-4919
PRESENTATION OF THE GIFTS: GIFT BEARERS…
Lent invites us to conversion ~ to do something different. We really would like
individuals/families to bring up the gifts of bread and wine, simple gifts that become
the Body and Blood of Christ, our food for the journey. Please consider doing this,
starting with the Lenten season and continue during the Easter Season, Ordinary Time
and the Advent/Christmas seasons. This ministry is one of the most ancient customs
of the Church, presenting the “work of human hands,” an exercise of our royal
priesthood. Please sign up on the sheets posted on the freestanding bulletin
board in the west lobby of church. If you want to do this but can’t walk the steps,
arrangements will be made. Just notify an usher.
Join the Baptism Prep Ministry
Have you noticed how many wonderful young families we have joining us at
Good Shepherd? With young families come babies, and with babies come baptisms.
We are in need of more adults to help with baptism prep for these families.
This is a beautiful ministry where you work with the youngest members our
community and the people who love them the most in their lives. You will have
guidance and training from Sister Joann, Deacon Sandy and Jenni Kryscio.
Please contact Corinna if you are interested in joining this ministry.
