The Go North Music Festival returned to Rich-ards Landing for its 3rd year. The festival featured 8 Canadian up-and-coming bands from various parts of the country. Unlike in previous years, camping on the Centennial Grounds was opened up both Friday before the festival and Saturday night making it a true weekend party for some. Staying the extra night also gave out of towners a chance to tour the island and see some of the other sights and attractions.
Unlike other festivals capturing nostalgia, the commit-tee behind the festival continue to focus on new excit-
ing bands, which although far from household names, certainly put on shows of a similar caliber to more well-known acts.
The lineup featured Dustin Jones and The Rising Tide, Jesse Merineau, An-other Crush, Sarah Smith, Skye Wal-lace, Sun K, Crystal Shawanda and was headlined by Birds of Bellwoods. Many

of the bands had been followed by the committee put-ting on the festival for some time.
For those hoping to hear something they’d recognize, almost every act did sneak in a cover or two into their set. Everything from The Beatles classic “Helter Skel-ter”, to The Killers “Somebody Told Me”, to Matthew Good’s “Everything is Automatic,” which Another Crush updated the lyrics to include more modern subjects and Dustin Jones and the Rising Tide rewrote a verse to Johnny Cash’s “I’ve Been Everywhere” to include places in northern Ontario that they’ve been to and was sung by the singer’s daughter.
In addition to the main stage, most performers also played stripped down sets on the side stage, for kids (who also got into the festival free if under 12) while they got to enjoy various activities throughout the day such as painting a giant mural.
While the festival is certainly of modest size, food options were quite plentiful between Island locals The Black Bear Café, The St. Joseph Hunters & Anglers grilling hamburgers as well as other companies from

the Algoma region including Low & Slow Smoked Fu-sion BBQ and Vibe Eatery & Juice Co. Northern Superi-or Brewing, who have been a constant supporter of the festival, were also back sponsoring the festival and serv-ing various beers at very reasonable prices, something you don’t often see at festivals or small concerts. Besides the food options, there was also a vendor market place where local artisans had their products on display for purchase, and you could even get your caricature done.
It will be up to township counsel if the festival returns for another year, we have not heard official numbers as far as attendance goes, it seemed comparable to last year. Of course the festival couldn’t have been done without the large group of volunteers and staff that spent count-less hours planning and preparing for the one day event.
Jody Wildman, who MC’ed between acts, did mention they would like to hear from people on their thoughts of the festival. Promotion for the festival was certainly up, and from the looks of those in attendance everyone seemed to be having a good time. While we are not about to critique performances, as the music you enjoy can be a deeply personal choice, we do feel the perfor-mances, as far as stage presence, certainly had increased this year. The reality is, if you want to have live music on this scale, or even bigger locally you have to support what is brought here, and we hope to see the festival continue into 2020 and beyond.

This week is part two of our six part informational series on Old Time Thursdays. Join us Thursday at 2pm as we go through the I Line School and learn about its history and the artifacts within it. Walk through history with costumed interpreters and watch as history comes alive! Here’s some in-formation about the school, facts are gleaned from many sources found in our archives.
In the early 1880’s the St Joseph Council asked residents of the I Line area to explore the possibili-ty of establishing a school for the Gawas Bay area. Upon completion John Irwin donated a parcel of property and the men of the area erected a log building. For many years this school was simply known as the Irwin School, but officially it was known as SS#5.
In December 1886 Mr. William Irwin was contract-ed to provide 24 cords of hardwood and one cord of cedar at a price of $1.00 per cord. A. Furkey was hired to build water closets for $9.75. In 1892 a new clock for the schoolhouse was purchased at a cost of $5.00 plus $1.15 for shipping. The first teacher in 1885 was Lizzie Young.
The school was later improved by adding planed lumber to the inside and outside and by 1930 40 students were in attendance.
In 1933 Jack Currie, a Hilton Beach contractor was hired to build a new brick building with larger desks and indoor facilities.
In 1964 all one room schoolhouses were closed and the students were bussed to either Richards Land-ing or Hilton Beach. The last teacher at the I Line School was Christine Starratt.
From 1885 to 1964 there were forty teachers who taught at the school with the longest serving teach-ers, Annabelle Cain (Harten) with eleven years and Kay Craig (McMaster) with five years.
Stay awhile, tour through the other five buildings, sit under the big tent, have a glass of lemonade and a butter tart and enjoy a trip down memory lane.

Many thanks to Mireille Gagnon Moes for sharing at the Summer School Series at the Mountain School in Jocelyn. We learned a lot about different types of wool, the process of spinning wool into yarn, and demon-strating how the drum carder blends colours togeth-er. Everyone is welcome to join us again this Sunday, 1-3pm, for some fun with the Nip and Tuck train!

Garter Snake
This is one kind of snake everyone has likely encountered at one time or another, both on the island where they are quite common, or through-out North America as they can be found almost everywhere on the continent. There are many different subspecies of garter snake.
Usually found near water here, their primary diet is amphibians. They will also hunt insects and small animals. Long thought to be non venom-ous, that is actually not the case. Recent studies have shown they do have a neurotoxic venom. Even if somehow you did provoke one of these shy snakes into biting you, you do not have to worry as the small amount of venom they pro-duce is not fatal to humans. Additionally, they have no way to deliver this venom to humans or other large animals as it’s their back teeth that release the venom. Predators are not the main threat to garter snakes, but road fatalities are there most often cause of death, make sure to watch out for sunbathers on the road.
Garter snakes do not lay eggs. Females give birth to an average of 10-30 babies live but up to 85 ba-bies have been reported from a single female. It’s a good thing she doesn’t have to name them all.
