OrganizationMissionStatement:Navajoare67timesmorelikelythanotherAmericanstolivewithoutrunningwateroratoilet.That'saninjustice.ManyNativescan'tgetenoughcleanwater,creatingacycleofpovertythatlimitshealth,happiness,educationalopportunity,andeconomicsecurity.Togetherwecanhelpfixthis!WhatWePropose:TheNavajoWaterProjectseeksfundingtocontinueexistingandon-goingeffortsbySt.BonaventureIndianMissionandSchoolandDigDeep,bothnon-profitorganizations,toprovideclean,runningwatertoapproximately205NavajoAmericanfamilieslivingwithintheSmithLakeChapterinNewMexico.St.BonaventureMissionwastheoriginalwatersupplierandhasbeendeliveringwaterbywatertruckforthepastthirtyyears.DigDeephashelpedprovideaseconddeliverywatertruckandwillbegindiggingnextspringtoprovidea2,000-foot-deepwelltoassureareliableongoingwatersource.Inthemeantime,PhaseFouroftheProjectinvolvesconstructionofindividualwatersystemstoNavajohomes,including1,200-gallonundergroundcisternsandthenecessaryequipmenttomakehomedeliverymoreefficientforNavajofamilies.Asolarpanel,batteryandelectricalconnectionsareincludedforfamilieswhichdonothaveelectricalservicetooperatethepump.

Figure1RunningWaterandSolarPowerfor$4,500“Installed”HowItWorks:ConstructionofeachhomewatersystemisperformedbyemployeesofSt.BonaventureIndianMissionatacostof$4,500,includinginstallation,materials,solarequipmentandhometrainingtooperate.Constructionworkhasbegunwithexistingcustomers’homesnearesttheexistingwatersource.Itwillexpandoutwardtomoredistantcustomersatarateofapproximately2systemscompletedeachweek.Theworkpacewillslowdownsomewhatasthehomesbecomemoredistant.Committedfundingwillallowconstructiontocontinueforapproximatelysixmonths,atwhichtimeabout75homeswillhavereceivedwatersystems.Additionalfundingisneededtocontinuethewatersysteminstallationprogram(PhaseFour)beyondthatpoint.Itwillrequireapproximately$585,000tocompletethe130unfundedhomesysteminstallations.TheSunLakesRotaryClubisseekingotherRotaryClubsin

Arizona,theUSAandInternationalRotaryClubsalongwiththeirRotaryDistrictsandTheRotaryFoundationgrantmatchingfundstoprovideasmuchoftheneededfundsaspossible.Avarietyofsmall,localfund-raisershavebeenusedtobeginthisproject,andSt.BonaventureMissionandDigDeepcontinuetoseekoutsidesourcesoffunding.Theirwebsiteseachprovidedetailedinformationconcerningthesourcesofexistingfunding.100percentofthesolicitedfundswillgotowardconstructionoftheindividualhomewatersystemsandnottoprogramadministrationofeitheragency.WhatWeSeek:SunLakesRotaryClubisseekingRotaryClubpartnersinArizona,USA,andInternationalclubsmatchingfunds,andfromtheirrespectiveRotaryDistricts(DDF)andTheRotaryFoundation,toraisefundstopayasmuchoftheremainingcostofPhaseFouraspossible.Thisglobalgrantisfor:25unitsx$4,500=$112,500ThisprojectmeetstheRotaryobjectivesofservingadirecommunityneed,withinternationalassistanceforthebenefitofNavajofamilies,includingtheirchildren.TheNavajoWaterProjectissustainablebytheongoingsupportofSt.BonaventureMissionandDigDeepusingdurableandreliablehomewatersystems.Theefficiencyoftheexistinghomewaterdeliverysystemwillbeimprovedbyincreasingthecapacityandeaseofeachdelivery.TheNavajofamilieswillhaveamoreadequatesupplyofcleanwatertosustainthembetweendeliveries.Bysettinganexample,RotarywillallowSt.BonaventureMissionandDigDeeptoattractotherdonorstoitsexistingprojects.Thisisa“shovel-ready”project.RotarywillnotbeinvolvedinanyconstructionissuesandtheselectionofthefamilieswhichwillreceivesystemswasdoneonabasisdeterminedbySt.BonaventureandDigDeep,withtheblessingofthetribalauthority.AcertificateofcompletionwillbeprovidedtoRotarywithintwoweeksofeachinstallation,verifyinguseoftheRotaryfundsandidentifyingthespecificbeneficiaries.Opportunitieswillexistforpublicityasdeemedappropriate.ForaRotarian,RotaryClubandDistrictwantingtoparticipate,sendanemailtoPastDistrictGovernor,GaryWhitingindicatingyourclubanddistrictinformationalongwithyourUSdollarpledge.Laterin2018youwillbecontactedtocollectyourpledgeandaddedtothegrant.Glw602bmw@wbhsi.comAdditionalmaterialscanbefoundatthefollowingwebsites:
