THE SCENE NOTES
Hello and welcome to our first digital format issue. Our digital November issue is intended to give our readers an easy, familiar format outside of the email inbox newsletter. We are excited about our initial feedback and expect to grow the content offerings and continue to seek interesting tidbits and profiles that you find valuable in a leisurely read. You can expect to see pictures and read updates of recent charitable events, learn about grass roots projects created by individuals to inspire positive change and a peek at great finds for responsible luxury. There is good news all around us and we can’t wait to share it with you.
Arriana D. from DamselDish.com spent 15 minutes with Dillon Loyek, a Torrey Pines High School football player, determined to gain a new perspective through travel and volunteering. We sat with a social entrepreneur who decided to intertwine her background of corporate responsibility into her own love for fashion by providing women with beautiful clothing and accessories from a collection of designers with a social conscience business model. Don’t forget to check out the
Community Calendar and our “we d” section for this months nifty
finds.
Over the next few months, we will fine tune the digital issue and look forward to hearing from you, our audience, to ensure we can bring you quick snippets that peak your interests.
Gratefully,
Marie Tahan DanielsEditor, Giving Scene | ONLINE

FUTURE : STANDARD
FROM PASSION TO REALITY
Last month we had a chance to catch up with online boutique owner, Jessica Althoff to speak with her about Future:Standard. This is what she had to say about the outlook on “ethical clothing” as a norm.
GS: Jessica, how did you decide to go into the online retail niche?
JA: I have always had a thing for fashion. It was always a love of mine. While I was at school at
University of San Diego, I came to the conclusion that I wanted something different, something that
combined my love for clothing with my core beliefs about how we shop and consume.
GS: How do you determine if you are going to carry a line or not?
JA: It is not a strict structure. Ethical clothing lines are in their infancy stage right now. Our goal is to carry
lines that make their best efforts where they can. Sometimes that means great sourcing only using
sustainable materials and other times it is ensuring that the regular business operations emphasizes
reducing its energy output and carbon footprint. There are so many aspects of being responsible in the
industry. We want to support these efforts and offer these options to our customers.
GS: What do you LOVE right now at Future:Standard?
JA: I’m really excited about our COVET line this season. We chose some really comfortable pieces to
carry us into fall. They use sustainable materials like soybean, bamboo and organic cottons.
GS: What is your prediction on the trend of ethical clothing?
JA: Ethical clothing is trending upward but it will take time. We know
that people want to buy eco-friendly fashion and accessories but it is
not yet the first thing to come to mind for the general population. We
are here to offer the alternatives.

Torrey Pines to Thailand Junior Plans An Adventure for Good
by Arriana Daniels | DamselDish.com
As a Junior at Torrey Pines High School and
varsity football player, Dillon Loyek has decided to
take action to build the foundation for his future.
This teen, who wants to become a special needs
teacher, decided to get some perspective by
changing his view of the world by organizing a
volunteer trip to the other
side of the planet and he is
inviting other teens to join
him.
The adventurers wi l l
embark on their trip to
Thailand first arriving in
Chiang Mai. Visitors will
u n d e r g o t h e i r
orientation and visit
local temples and
night markets. They
w i l l h a v e t h e
opportunity to learn
T h a i w o rd s a n d
meet some local
Buddhist monks.
Culture will also be
e x p e r i e n c e d
through the taste
buds. Travelers
w i l l h a v e
opportunities to
hike through the
forest, go rafting or
tour the elephant center. However, they won't
just be seeing the city and towns humming with
activities; the group will be lead through Chiang
Mai's lush mountains. Traveling on foot and
elephant, members will arrive at a hill tribe
community. The outsiders will be enveloped into
the traditions of Thailand as they work side by
side with the local villagers to create community
improvements.
The project is still in the beginning stages and
being planned in partnership with a local Teen
Korps chapter and Global Routes. Some of the
details may change, but the objective

remain the same. Volunteers hope to make a
difference for the villagers they meet, whether by
building a water tank, a school or teaching
language skills.

coming weeks.
GS: "What inspired you to want to make a
difference in the lives of other people?"
DL: I've always enjoyed seeing the affects of the
things I do and how it benefits them. I decided
that it was something I wanted to pursue. For
example, I want to become a special needs
teacher because I want to know that I will make
a positive impact in a kid’s life forever.
GS: "Is there any special meaning in the
place you chose to volunteer in?"
DL: Well, my parents had been asking me what I
wanted to do with my life. For a long time, I
didn't know. I knew about the floods in Thailand,
but I never really knew how badly it was affecting
the people living there. When I came across a
picture of a dog saving a baby monkey in the
floods, I realized I wanted to make a difference
too, no matter how small.
GS: "What made you want to become a
special needs teacher?
DL: I was helping a special needs teacher at
school during one of my free periods. Helping
her out was rewarding and inspired me to want
to do the same. Also, having dyslexia myself, I
think I could easily relate to the students.
We will continue to post updates to the plans for
Dillon’s trip as we get closer to summer 2012 on
GivingScene.com.

42nd Día del Sol | Beach & Country Guild
The 42nd Annual Día Del Sol event switched up the tradition this year by holding the event at the spectacular Grand Del Mar in Carmel Valley. The luncheon which included a silent and live auction and full runway fashion show was a stunning display of team work and
commitment from those who make up the Beach & Country Guild. The Guild, whose efforts benefit United Cerebral Palsy of San Diego, estimates initial tallies at $125,000.
“We were so pleased with the Beach and Country Guild Committee and community partners who make the Día Del Sol such a spectacular event each year. We have been blessed with the generosity of many who understand the need to continue supporting the
services and programs provided by United Cerebral Palsy of San Diego. The families are so grateful and the part we play in this event is a privilege we cherish.”
