Agenda

The Future of Work

Focus on Gender

Gender Transformative Programs

Gender Transformative Tool Development

IT´S TIME TO REIMAGINE WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

WHILE THE IMPACT OF CHANGE CUTS ACROSS THE WORKFORCE, MARGINALIZED AND VULNERABLE POPULATIONS RISK A ‘DOUBLE DISADVANTAGE.’

65%NEARLY1 IN 10

of children starting school today will hold jobs that don’t exist yet jobs is at risk of

automation across OECD countries

WE NEED TO PREPARE MARGINALIZED AND VULNERABLE YOUTH TO FUTURE

OF WORK

THE FUTURE OF WORK HAS FOUR DEFINING FEATURES:

DIGITAL & HUMAN

COOPERATIVE & COLLABORATIVE

FLEXIBLE &FLUID

KNOWLEDGE & TASK-BASED

THESE ARE THE SKILLS NEEDED

SPECIALIZE FOR WORK

Why focus on gender?

1. World Bank Blog. https://blogs.worldbank.org/opendata/improving-pathway-school-stem-careers-girls-and-women2. UNESCO. Cracking the code: Girls’ and women’s education in STEM. 2017. https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000253479

Gender gaps widen with age1:• Primary education – gender parity with enrollment & completion, science &

math• Secondary education – mixed results for enrollment & completion, science &

math• Higher education – higher rates of young women’s enrollment & completion,

fewer women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)

Globally, only 35% of STEM students in higher education are women2

“If we are not intentionally inclusive,we will be unintentionally exclusive.”

INTENTIONALINCLUSION

HCD INCLUSION PLUG-ININCLUSION SHOULD BE INTEGRATED throughout the entire HCD process. Regular reflection points ensure that issues are identified before progressing further in the process.

I N C L U S I O N

PRINCIPLES FOR INCLUSIONACTIVITYHow do we define inclusion?

- Inclusion can mean different things in different contexts

- This definition is as important as it is time consuming

- There is a design paradox: if you try to be everything to everyone, you end up being nothing to no one

- It is important that you define what inclusion means to this group

Spend 30 minutes having an open group discussion about how this group will define the boundaries of inclusion for this project.

‘if you know your principles, your decisions are easy’

After the discussion, spend another 30 minutes defining your ‘Principles for Inclusion’

INCLUSION & INSPIRATIONEXTREMES & MAINSTREAMS

The concept of extremes or edge cases as they are often known is a typical approach to finding outliers for your potential solution. However, these cases are often dropped into the ‘too hard basket’ and forgotten about when designing through an iterative approach.

To overcome this, an additional lens can be added known as STRESS CASES1. Stress cases are people that may be included in your target group, but may not be included in your solution. Stress cases should be used to test your ideas and solution at multiple points throughout the HCD process. A stress case should be able to demonstrate how strong and inclusive your solution is. Remember ’SOMETHING THAT ISN’T AVERAGE MAY STILL BE NORMAL’. e.g. a young person looking for work may not want to identify as male or female in a dropdown.

CASE STUDYShane CreapingBear is a member of the Kiowa tribe of Oklahoma. In 2014 he tried to log into Facebook by was denied with the following response:

“Your Name Wasn’t ApprovedIt looks like that name violates our name standards. You can enter an updated name again in 1 minute. To make sure the updated name complies with our policies, please read more about what names are allowed on Facebook”

The only option Shane had to resolve the issue was a button that read ‘Try Again’ – nowhere to seek help, nowhere to validate his name. One clear message – you don’t belong here. And to top it off, he got this message on Indigenous People’s Day, otherwise known as Columbus day – a day many Native Americans see as the beginning of the end for the people, the culture and community.

STRESS CASE PERSONAACTIVITY

The persona is a common approach used by many HCD practitioners. The stress case outlines a persona of someone who may feel excluded by your solution. This should be used at multiple points in the process.

1. Review those you plan to interview and identify themes

2. Using a typical persona or empathy map, create a persona that shares very little, or nothing, in common with those themes

Questions:

1. What emotions and challenges may influence them?

2. What state may they be in when interact with you?

3. Why might they feel excluded by your target group?

4. What triggers may influence their interactions?

STRESS CASE PERSONAACTIVITY

1. Pick an app that everyone in the group has on their phone that you use every day.

2. You have 6 mins to create a user that would 'stress' this app. E.g. be excluded from, be made uncomfortable by etc.

3. Think about how a user 'experiences' the app.

4. Think about how it could be improved.

5. Report back:

1. Call out the app

2. What is one thing that your user would experience using the app?

3. What one thing could you tell the developers to do to improve

6. Now spend 2 mins doing an online search for the founding or managing team? What do you notice?
