Getting Started with PowerPoint

• What is PowerPoint?

Presentation Graphics-used by speakers to convey main points of presentation.

• How do I get in to PowerPoint?

Go to Start-Programs-Microsoft PowerPoint

Power Point Screen

• Across the top of your screen there is a blue bar that says Microsoft PP and gives the title of your presentation. Do you know the name of that bar?

• The bar below the Title bar-begins with File, Edit, View-Does anybody know the name of that bar?

• Menu Bar• Below the Menu bar are the toolbars-Look under

View on the Menu bar to identify which toolbars are on screen and what others are available. If you place your mouse pointer on the icon-you will get a pop-up defining the icon.

Power Point Screen

On the Left is the Outline Pane, the bottom is the Notes Pane and of course the slide pane.

Creating a New Presentation

• A blank presentation allows you to set up your show from scratch.

• If you are in PP-go to File-New. Different versions of PP open a new file in different ways. Let’s compare 98/2000/XP

• The Auto Content Wizard gives you a template to create a presentation.

Blank Presentation

• After you choose the type of presentation that you want, choose the type of slide you are going to use.

• There are always a few ways to do anything on the computer-

• Under Format-on the ? Bar-choose Slide Layout

• Go to Insert on the ? Bar-choose new slide• Click new slide on the formatting toolbar

Slide Design

• Once you have chosen your slide layout-you can choose a design.

• Under Format on the Menu bar-choose slide design.

• Choose the design template that you like.

Background

• You can also choose a background for your slide show.

• You cannot choose a design and a background though.

• Under Format on the Menu Bar-choose Background.

• Click on your choice-check out fill effects• You can apply a background to all slides

or selected slides.

Animation

• You can apply animation to words and pictures.

• Under Slide Show on the Menu Bar-choose custom animation.

• You must first select or highlight whatever it is that you want to animate

• Here is custom animation on text!

Animation

• You can also add animation to a picture.

• Go to Slide Show on the menu bar, choose custom animation and add effect.

• Another choice is to use Animation Schemes-like this!

To Insert a Picture-Go to Insert on Menu Bar-Picture-Clip Art or from a file you have saved.

Slide Transitions

• A Slide Transition is like custom animation on the entire slide.

• Here you can also add sound.

• Here is an example of a slide transition with a custom animation of a graphic from the internet.

Timing

• You can advance a slide on mouse click or automatically

• On the Slides tab in normal view, select the slides you want to set the timing for.

• On the Slide Show menu, click Slide Transition.

• Under Advance slide, select On Mouse Click or the Automatically after check box, and then enter the number of seconds you want the slide to appear on the screen.

Views

• You can change the look of your presentation under View on the Menu Bar

• Here are the different views-Normal, Slide Sorter, Notes Page, Master and Color/Grayscale

To Insert WordArt-go to Insert on Menu Bar-Picture-WordArt

Template

• The next four slides are for you to plan a presentation of your own.

• Create a presentation “All About Me”

• Fill in the blanks on paper and then type in the information on your slide.

• After all info is typed in-you can try the fun stuff!
