Field Trips / Outings

Educators must ensure that they have written permission from the parent/guardian prior to any field trip or outing. The Agency has permission forms available or you may create your own consent form. The consent form must include: Date of field trip/outing, destination, departure & return time, method of transportation if applicable, costs, purpose of field trip and planned activities, phone number and address of the destination if available.

Travel time should not exceed 30 minutes. (One way).

The Educator will prepare the children ahead of time for the outing/field trip. Explaining to children where they will be going, what they will be doing, who they will be listening to and what they will be seeing.

The Educator will discuss safety rules with the children prior to the trip.

Additional adults/chaperones if attending the trip, have a clear understanding of their role and what safety rules the children need to follow. The additional adults/chaperones may not be left alone with the children at any time, and do not take responsibility for the children. The Educator assumes full responsibility and will provide constant supervision.

The Educator must carry the children’s emergency cards, a cell phone, a first aid kit and emergency medications if applicable.

Field Trips / Outings

• A field trip/outing is a special, planned event that relates to the children’s interests and/or your program goals.

• Any outing should have specific learning opportunities, and outcomes in mind when being planned.

• Field trips/ outings are not a requirement of the Agency; it is up to the Educator to decide if a field trip / outing would benefit all children in care.

Running personal errands like going to the grocery store or the bank for example are not field trips.

What should you consider before going.

• What preparation will be needed beforehand? • Consider COVID safety. • Will you need assistance with supervision? • Will this field trip positively or negatively

affect the children’s daily routine? How will it impact the children’s daily routine (e.g. snack time, nap time, toileting or physical activity)

• Are parents ok with field trips / outings? • The transportation time may not exceed 30

minutes. (one way) • Evidence and documentation (e.g. pictures,

video, and journaling) of the field trip should be kept.

Ifyouareleavingyourcommunity,orcrossingabusyroaditisimportanttogetwrittenpermissionfromparents.ThiswouldbeconsideredanOuting.

What do you take outside with you? Having a backpack organized and ready to grab and go

whenever you head outside . . .

o Emergency Cards o First Aid Kit o Emergency Medication if you have. o Wet Wipes / Hand Sanitizer / Masks o Bug Spray and Suncreen o Know the AHS guidelines for outside. o Snacks and water
